While the message is a good one it's highly hilarious coming from Larsen. I haven't read Savage Dragon in a good long time, but I did read fifty issues or so. And every single character was based on a previously existing character.

So you've got a guy whose success is based on "re-imagining" the Marvel and DC stables trying to raise the flag of risk-taking and creative imagination.

Hah! Hadn't even considered that atoningunifex. You're right - his stories are original, but the concepts are straight out of Kirbyville.

I guess part of the reason I liked it is that in reading all the old comics I'm reading for my blog, I'm seeing again and again how writers come in, add a new cast member, tell 'thier' version of some classic story, and then move on for the next guy to tell that same story over and over and over.

Like right now, I'm reading Iron Man. Just got up to the Layton Era. What a refreshing change. Instead of "Hey, let's have Tony fight Titanium Man again!" you get "So what's Tony Stark LIKE, anyway?".

I'm getting tired of the navel gazing. No matter what happens, you know that the end of the day the status quo will be back. Sure, there may be a new cast member or an old one may return, but at the end of the day, very little has changed.

The rare exceptions to this rock. Like Invincible. It's nice because since it's not a big two book, you get the feeling that changes are perminant. It allows me to enjoy my love of superheroes and still get a story out of it.

Heck, even Young Avengers does this for me. The characters are fresh and new enough that we're not seeing all the cliches played out over and over.

Sigh.

Well, clapclapclap for Erik. He managed to take something other creators have been saying for decades and boil it down to the online equivalent of a Muntzian taunt, thereby ensuring that everyone online will be linking to it and arguing over it.

Like I said, clapclapclap.

But it's just so lame. Warren Ellis said it better almost 10 years ago and even his version of the message got irritating and increasingly petulant over time. "Sucking on the corporate tit"? Are you kidding me?

Wow.

How were your snark-os today?

I think ti's a bit interesting hearing it from the head of Image comics as opposed to a writer, even if that writer is Warren "I'm so coooool" Ellis.

Hey, I'm in a great mood. Shut up.

And Larsen's not being snarky? Isn't that the whole point? He says something deliberately snarky so everyone links to it and by the weekend we've all argued ourselves hoarse over it?

Erik seemed to conviently forget that the readers don't want new characters.

But other than that, it's the same rant I've seen many times, and like Tom said, I've seen it done better.

I want Erik to get off his damn high horse and get back to work on Savage Dragon. It used to be my favorite book. Now when I'm lucky enough to get an issue every 6 months or so, it's all disjointed and doesn't flow with the other issues. If he can't take the work load of running Image and being a CBR writer, maybe he should just write SD and let someone else illustrate it.

About his comments, yeah, I've heard it all before. I've enjoyed his other articles better than the current one.

But isn't that what Ellis and Grant and every other writer do?

I know the message isn't new - I just think the messenger stating it is interesting.

Absolutely. Which is why it's less than interesting this time around.

Why does his being the head of Image, change anything? Does it give it more credence? He's still just a creator. If this came from the head of DC or Marvel, then it would be more interesting as it would likely mean an shift in directon for those companies, but really, in the end, it's just another guy.
