Yes. It's that time of month again, already. Captain Britain & MI13 #13 (Yes, it's into its second year, now) hits US stores today, and UK stores tomorrow. Some of you may already have a copy through mail.
Once again, this is a co-ordinated thread to help out those who are still getting into the series. If you want to post a review, or link to an online review in your post, go ahead. But try to use spoiler tags on this front page. And let's keep the Sales talks to a minimum - there's a seperate thread for those, which most of you are probably familiar with, by now: http://forums.comicbookresources.com...d.php?t=246615 And as usual the book's writer Paul Cornell will be using his own blog as a kind of letters page (Don't you miss those? I do.) so why not drop him a line, there? http://www.paulcornell.com/ Anyway, so were up to Part Three proper of Vampire State. Last issue the final stumbling block for Dracula's invasion of Britain was removed after the destruction of the Skull of the late Quincy Harker, one time ally of Eric "Blade" Brookes, who had placed an enchantment over Great Britain barring all vampires entry without being invited. With the removal of that Dracula is now free to bring his invasion fleet (And as we saw in #12 it very much is a fleet of giant ships) to Earth and take over. This is the issue where it all happens. And with MI13's last chance of averting it gone, now they have to stop it's progression. A fine time for your main hero to be having a crisis of confidence... What with his powers now being rather dependent on that confidence. Forget the Skrulls THIS is an invasion. Dracula is of course joined by Kenneth "Baron Blood" Crichton, Lillith "Mother of Demons" and the ghost pirate Captain Fate. He's built the ships. And of course, though stubbornly TRYING to refuse, Kenneth's dear mother - Spitfire. spoilers:
Back home spoilers:
Not much time to write any more, right now. I'll be back later. But in the meantime discuss, people! And for those who are still wondering whether or not to pick this up there are preview pages accompanying a review over at Comics Bulletin: Comics Bulletin Review and preview pages for #13 From which I import the following quote: Quote:

And just to point out, knowing how comic writing vs. publication schedules often work out, that when Paul wrote this
spoilers:
on Twitter back in February, that it was probably either the May (this issue) or June (#14) issue he was referring to. |

One other note. Although the art has been credited on previews and solicits to Leonard Kirk, a fair part of the artwork this issue comes courtesy of Ardian Syaf. If you're looking for it you'll realise that it's not all Kirk. But not as instantly as with Mike Collins or Pat Olliffe in previous fill ins. Adian is a really good fit to the book's style. It certainly doesn't lose much from the change. For more info on Mr Syaf take a look at his DeviantART page:

Another very good, though the last few pages clearly didn't happen the way they're being described. My guess is that MI13 sent some kind of decoys into Dracula's very obvious ambush.
I'm not sure how Dracula was able to guess that Scarlet Witch wouldn't pierce his magic barrier, since he doesn't know that Wanda is Loki; and it's not that he says she can't, just that she won't, and he doesn't know the reason. I liked the cameos by the Mighty Avengers.

My GOD, I love what Cornell is doing with this team. I haven't been so invested in a group of characters since... I don't even know when. X-Factor, I guess. And anytime a writer is being compared to PAD, it's a good thing. Heh. (At least, unless they're talking shit about spoilers and the internet...)
Great issue. "A"

I always hated Dracula as a marvel villain back in the 80’s but Cornell has made me respect him. He is now one of Marvel’s great villains and should be up there with Dr. Doom, and Magneto as a world threat. I just hope he doesn’t “die” at the end of this arch.
Osborn is a dick. I can’t stand him and never will. I never found him that great and I still don’t see the big deal. It was sad to see that death and I hope that person will be back somehow. I was hoping we would see more recognizable vampires but that is ok. Book was great overall. 8 out 10

Every month, when I read this book, I expect it to start middling, or there to be a dull moment because of a cast of B-Listers facing threats like Excalibur did... along the lines of Bash & Cooter robbing banks back in the day.
And... it's my fault for lowering my guard, and being surprised thirteen times in a row. Every time this thing comes out, it's the best book I read that week. This one was no different, with the joy of an issue ending where the bad guys have spoilers:
Outstanding work from Cornell and Kirk, again.
