I downloaded the "workprint" copy of X-Men Origins: Wolverine last night and took it home to watch. Before anyone jumps to point it out, I AM aware that it is not a 100% complete version of the film.
I had decided that I wasn't going to go see the movie in theaters, at least until it had been out for long enough for reports on how good it was and how they handled the characters, specifically Deadpool. When I saw that the "workprint" had leaked onto the internet, I saw it as an opportunity to get a preview of the movie that would help me decide whether or not I wanted to go pay to see it in theaters. If the downloaded version was good, I'd go see it in theaters, but if it was as abysmally shitty as most people seemed to be saying it was, I wouldn't. Many of you will probably disagree with that point of view, but quite frankly I don't care. To get to the point, I took this home last night fully expecting it to be a piece of shit and I couldn't wait to come one here and tell you all how horrible it was. To sum it up, I put this in the dvd player and started watching and as much as I (to be honest) WANTED to hate this movie... I just couldn't. It was too good. Even the character Ryan Reynolds played (more on that below) was done and explained in a way that made it perfectly acceptable to me. This unfinished version of the film has made a believer out of me and I will definitely be going to the theater on May 1 to see it. Last edited by Hurricane; 04-02-2009 at 04:27 PM. |

That was my favorite part. |

Also, the metal is not the metal you say it is, and Bohusk isn't in the movie, Monaghan's a different character altogether. |

Oh, and I couldn't remember what his name was so I looked it up on IMDB. Apparently they have his character name wrong because he's listed as "Bolt" in the credits. My mistake for looking on IMDB.

I own one of those friendly neighborhood comic shops.
Here is clip of a conversation I had recently: Dude: "Jeff! Howyabeenbuddy!" Me: "Awesome bro! Been a while." Dude: "Listen man. I'm gonna chop a bunch of titles off my pull list." Me: "Sorry to hear it man." Dude: "Sorry to say it." Me: "Times are rough. So I understand it." Dude: "Not for me. I just got a raise. Everything is golden!" Me: "Oh well. Sorry you aren't reading as much anymore." Dude: "I just download the comics on a torrent site now." Me: "OH! You mean you steal the comics." Dude: "Well. Not really. Information is free." Me: "Yeah. My rent isn't though. And someone like you who claims to love comics, yet stops spending money in the business so you can just steal the comics for free is doing a great job of wrecking the whole industry! Good job man!" Dude: :::uncomfortable and speechless::: Me: "It's stealing. And it puts small comic shops under all over the country." Dude: "But if I download a comic and I like it, I buy it so it's like, even." Me: "You usually drop around $30 a week here. You are telling me that you will no longer do that, but if you like a comic you stole on your laptop, you might drop in to buy it." Dude: "It's not like that." Me: "Whatever helps you sleep at night bro." Wolverine? No, I did not watch it. It was free. I had the link sent to me by someone who doesn't know any better. And no way was I gonna do that. No way. A REAL FAN waits in line, buys a ticket and enjoys the show or hates it. It's stealing. No matter what. And before you ask, the answer is NO. I do not have any pirated songs or movies or shows or albums on any computer that I own.

Like crochet. I don't understand this sense of obligation, buy/steal what is a pisspoor product. Then you're no longer engaging with an interest - you're under the influence of a compulsion. I love that Hurricane has stated he's actually going to pay to see this movie to experience it on the big screen. It's Metallica all over again. |

In my own personal opinion, the movie was good enough for multiple theatrical viewings. I will see it at least twice and maybe more than that depending on my budget a month from now.

I don't mean to get on a soapbox or stick my finger in your face. I just want to illustrate the consequences of downloading, that the comics industry has to endure. As someone who's professional living is made on comics and the like, it is frustrating to watch money evaporate out of this business, at the fingertips on laptop keyboards. If it changes your perspective on pirating stuff in the world of comic book fandom, awesome. People do need to be realistic about the fact that downloading comic books and hero related entertainment, is costing business owners their livelihoods. It is costing the people their jobs.

That isn't what I did though. I downloaded an unfinished version of a movie that I intend to go see in theaters. The boom mike operator will get his $20 as one of you put it above. This is the first (and likely last) time I've ever downloaded a movie. |
