Video: http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/the...in_with_police
And the story: http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn...c.php?t=531726 I'm nearly at a loss for words.... Yeah, the law was broken, Moats deserved a ticket, but he didn't deserve to be treated that way. All it takes is 1 minute of this officer's time to walk in and check to see if Moats is telling the truth. Instead the officer berates him and tells him to "shut his mouth" numerous times. And during all of this....? Moats' mother-in-law passes away after a battle with breast cancer. EDIT to add: Dallas area police apologize to Moats: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slu...v=ap&type=lgns

Agreed. The cop behaved like a grade A dickhead. Glad the rest of the department apologized.
Yes, the man technically should have had a ticket but certainly the police department could have taken care of it in absentia. The cop is also a grade A moron. If someone is rushing to a hospital in the middle of the night chances are it's NOT for a papercut! Idiot should have realized something was wrong and behaved appropriately -- including having respect for a family that was starting into the first stages of grieving. Makes me wonder if the cop has ever lost anyone close to him.

And isn't a 'stupid fucking asshole' the very definition of a racist? |

Here's a link to a blog, as well as 2 vids that show the entire 17 minutes: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shu...urn=nfl,150809

I hope pricks like that are in the extreme minority of the police force.

For the record, I don't know if the cop was a racist or not, but nothing in that 17 minutes indicated to me that he was anything more than an asshole on a power trip. He just happened to be a white asshole and they just happened to be black recipients of his assholyness. Just because someone of another race is being a dick to you, that does not automatically mean they are racist. That attitude is ridiculous and what I think is a large problem with people today. It could just mean that they are a dick. |

Let's get this out of the way: In no way do I think this cop was being racist. Period. He was just a prick on a power trip. Calling him a racist is clouding things... I can understand where the Moats family is coming from and all, but this asshole (as far as I could tell) did not use any type of racial epithets during the time he was saying "shut your mouth".

I saw this on ESPN earlier. Just wow. What a complete a$$hole. How observant..did he not realize where they were? Not see what was happening? He obviously did not listen and...ugh....I feel so angry and yet Moats handled it better than could be expected in such a mindset that he must have been in. Sometimes I think they give some of these guys/gals special classes on how poorly to treat the citizens they are employed to "protect." I know there are many many excellent law enforcement officers that keep our communities safe, but there is too great of a number of utter douchebags with badges out there too.

To the best of my knowledge, the cop in this story is probably worse, although the guy Moats dealt with is also indefensible. Perhaps not racist, but certainly an asshole.

I have to wonder if this would've even made the news, if Moats wasn't a famous person. What if he was just an ordinary black citizen---would it have made the news? Maybe, maybe not.
And it *should*. It *ought* to. And, listening to the officer, he all but called Moats "boy," in my opinion. I think race definitely was a factor in how the officer treated the Moats family, and was behind that damned inhumane lecturing and time-wasting on the officer's part. Not only that, a few minutes into the video you hear a female voice telling the officer that the mother-in-law inside is Code Blue, and they need Moats inside to sign as the responsible party before they can resussitate her. And he *still* keeps Moats outside, and lectures... and poor Moats is stuck saying "Yes sir, Yes sir" till the cows come home. Or more aptly, until past the time his mother-in-law died. I have to wonder if there are any grounds under which the officer could be charged with interfering with any attempts to resussitate this woman, and thus, causing her to lose her life. I certainly hope so. I think the guy wasn't just a dick, but a racist petty dick too hyped on his own power over some black guy to have one instant of sympathy or heart. And I hope they throw him under the jail. I also hope they add in something to their training to all police officers out there, on how to handle this kind of situation.

I saw no evidence of racism, but I for some reason doubt he would have done to same to a white family.
