Need help getting started!

I'm a relative newcomer to comics, and am feeling quite intimidated by all the different universes in marvel comics. Ultimates? Uncanny? Amazing? Astonishing?

Anyway, I really think I would enjoy getting into Xmen comics, as I always loved the cartoon as a kid and collected trading cards, etc. I also enjoyed reading The Ultimates books. Problem is, I'm just not sure where to start reading! So...I was wondering if anyone here could give me some recommendations on some good Xmen books to pick up, or if there is a monthly series going on right now that I should get in on.
