Thumbs up Final Crisis Requiem #1 Spoilers and Discussion(what a beautiful issue)

It's been a long time since an issue made me well up, and oh boy did this issue deliver on all levels. So many levels.

Heads up: This issue is written and drawn by the same creative team that Gave us the niffy little Black Adam Mini series last year-The Dark Age. Doug Mahnke(pronoucned Monkey I think) and former editor Peter Tomasi.

Perfect Art, story and moments to boot.

it appears the martian manhunter put up a fairly decent fight against libra and the society,He sent out telepathic attacks on Luthor and libra and the rest of the society, making them think the JLA were attacking them one by one, Superman V Luthor, Flash V Grodd ect ec t, one thing got me, why would batman kiss Shiva or was that Talia? but libra stabbed him with the immortal savages knife and killed him., As he died he sent out messages to the JLA, apparently setting them all on fire, batman looked badass on fire and didn't seem hurt?!

This issue gives all his back story , told by the JLA,The way tomasi done this was by having the JLA tell the martians history thru the JLA members like black canary and superman and batman ect ect talking like some sort of outer body experience, alfred walks past bruce while he tells the history fo the martian manhunter and it appears each member of the JLA that is telling the story is entranced or something. The spectre helps set up the funeral, and so do the GLCS.They bring everybody, I mean eveybody,

peter tomasi loves his beetle lyrics, as we nightwing readers have being having fun spotting them lyrics in issues, here we get "in my lifetime" mixed in with the narration/dialogue.

Nightwing is actually the one to find his body, makes sense seen as though tomasi is writing nightwing and relates to the dead heros bodies story in a sense

nice last page image of john and his family reunited.

art=A
writting=A+

I'm actually going to say it:

The last page just made me cry.

The issue gives us more of J'onn's demise, and his final minutes, so the quick 1 panel from FC #1 is NOT the long and short of it. I kinda expected the effects of his death, but not to the extent that happened here.

And I love how the last several pages were, essentially, a love story to Ostrander's MM series (which Tomasi edited).

They picked the absolute best person to write this comic.

And the art is just terrific. The cover image, that I 1st saw yesterday, made me ponder about what the book would look like - but dammit if this wasn't some of the best art I've ever seen Doug Mahnke give us.

I'm so glad MM got this farewell.

RIP J'onn.

I must say that was a beatiful issue, despite, to me at least, the confusion of Final Crisis .

A beautiful issue true but the problem is the same as I heard about Countdown in that it took a seperate issue from Final crisis to tell the tale. During Countdown (bad series I agree) one of the biggest complaints was having to buy numerous outside issues to get the whole story. this is the same. Just saying...........

But for Final Crisis #1, All you need to know is, Libra Killed The Martian manhunter injusticely to prove a point, we had a one page funeral, and the reaction from Green Arrow and Green lantern.

This issue is great because it gives the reader the choice to read more about that incident, The Main Final crisis series will avenge his death, or at least Libra will get his comuppence.

Peter Tomasi needs more work at DC:) well we now know he will be writing the Kingdom come specials with geoff johns.

Having not read the issue - why did the MM send out illusion attacks when fighting for his life? Might he not have had more powerful and lethal options?

Seems like the good ol' GL giant green boxing glove kind of ploy. Do something that is likely to let the BG have a chance to toast you.

I'm thinking it was something like a 2-pronged "attack." To the heroes, he transmits the history of Mars to keep his people's legacy alive somehow, as well as his thoughts and best wishes to his friends - and to the villains, he lets loose all his anger and rage, which results in the illusions of their enemies brutally murdering the villains (although it's very different in Talia's case)

And that latter part makes me wonder in turn: are the illusions being forced on them by J'onn out of rage in his dying throes, or are the illusions just bringing to surface something in the villains, like "This is what I ultimately see _____ doing to me"?

Ah, I agree with you 100% about why this needed to be it's own one-shot.

I mean, that's the point of comics. "Did you like this? Then follow Matchstick Man's Adventures in the All-New Matchstick Monthly!" They're all about getting you to expand your reading options. And if you don't want to read it, you don't *have* to. Nothing worse than having a main story derailed by a sub-plot that's not integral.

From both a story-telling and business perspective, a one-shot was the right way to go.

True,

This is not essential to the overall story for Final crisis, But it's a testement to the abiltiy of writer peter tomasi to make sure a compelling and heartfelt read.

I feel like i got my bang for my buck, well four bucks!

Long and short of it... Grant Morrison is not writing a Martian Manhunter story. The Martian Manhunter was in it, briefly. He served the purpose of Morrison's story.

However, they put this one-shot out knowing that some fans, especially Martian Manhunter fans, would want more explanation and exposition. There is nothing in this book that needed to be in Final Crisis.

I thought this was a very nice send-off for J'onn. Like Superman, I also hope for an eventual ressurection. I think Peter Tomasi just gave some evidence that he may be someone to look at as far as making it happen someday.

Maybe when Martian Manhunter is eventually resurrected they will put Tomasi on the book. That would be nice.

Awesome, peter is passionate about these characters.

did you know, he created the baby mongul in showcase years ago because he knew DC were planning to kill the daddy Mongul in the mark waid helmed crossover underworld unleased.

pete fought hard to save mongul, NERON killed big mongul,

but baby Mongul showed up in superman our worlds at war, and Infinite crisis #1 and then the Green lanterns titles of late.

awesomesauce.

I hope this is a one-shot. Or are we going to get Final Crisis Requiem #2-7, featuring more deaths of high-profile heroes?
