All I've heard is that it's a young superhero learning the ropes. Is it a Spider-Man knockoff?

Invincible deals with parent child relationships. It deals with friendships. And up until the last issue it has been incredibly upbeat and fun. Now, it's about the point where a child must learn to pick their own direction and fight against their parents. This is a series about growing up. And it is extremely well done.

RB hit it on the head... it's definitely a title worth at least checking out the first volume.

Invincible is fantastic! It's the sort of book that needs to be published and recognized. I think that years from now it'll be looked back upon with the same kindness that people look at the old First Comics books with.

But as Ronald explained it does dealing with growing in the context of a super hero book. It's one of the best reads in comics. Seriously pick up the first two trades. And the art is fantastic. |

Basically Nolan beats the shit out of Mark throughout the entire issue. No subplots or asides. Just twenty pages of Nolan knocking some sense into his boy. And Mark doesn't put up much of a fight. He still believes there is some good in his dad and this is where Kirkman acknowledges it. It's an out for Mark to outright hate his dad. But when he says in 500 years when all his friends and his mother are gone he'll still ahve his dad. And Nolan is gone angry and upset and he can't finish off his son. There's still a hear in the monster.
I didn't like this issue as much as the last. But I think it's a fitting conclusion for the most ambitious arc of the series. Kirkman is touching on some serious mature themes here and taking his characters to darker places. I can't wait to see how this plays. I mean with Nolan off in space what does Mark tell his mother? How does he face his friends? Eve and the other superheros? |

It's never fun when you find out your Dad isn't the man you thought he was.
It's even worse if he leaves the family right when you most need him. Right when you most need a role model of how to be a man. And instead you get forced into responsibilities far before you're ready. It wasn't easy for me. And I forsee that the super-heroic equivalent will be just as difficult. The break-up of a family...especially if before that family seemed to be ideal...HURTS. It hurts like Hell. For years afterwards. If Kirkman takes the honest route...then Mark's gonna be messed up for a long time after this. These wounds take years to heal. I'm almost 28 and in some ways I'm still the angry 14 year old who would give anything to have the life he had "before" back. |

I wish I had heard how great this book was sooner, since now I am having trouble hunting down the back issues! Before anyone mentions it, I prefer the back issues to tpb's so I consider them the last resort.

Really enjoying this title, can't wait for #12 to hit the shelves (hopefully tomorrow). I find it to be refreshing as well as funny. Really keen to see how the latest polt twist pans out.

It's interesting you brought this up Tynne because Kirkman's reassurance that this won't change the book that much well i don't find that reassuring. Finding out your dad is leaving a double life is something that does change you. You look at things differently. I lucked out because my dad never did but I know what's it's like finding out your male role model isn't what you thought he was.
I do like the last page because it makes it clear that Nolan has some left good in him and his time on did affect him. But it comes back to how Mark and his mother are going to deal with his depature. I'm curious if Mark comes right out and tells his mother. Maybe she already knows. The book has lost it's innocence but I only see that as a good thing creatively. Marks life was getting a little too uncomplicated and ideal dnd while that's fun for a while it's not that interesting. You have to admire Kirkman for not taking the easy route even though we really don't want this to happen (which is kind of the point). Lets hope he can deal with this as honestly as he done before. |

Kirkman will pretty much destroy any emotional honesty he's built up if the book doesn't show some major damage in both the son and mother for a long time to come. This family didn't show any signs of dysfunction or being "broken" before...so this won't be a case where either can "put on a happy face...we're better off without the jerk!"
I was glad he didn't take the easy way out...and I hope he continues to not take the easy way out. This is a scarring event. It warps one's life. The pain does heal...but it's a gradual healing. After lots of anger...and lots of tears. If you thought this book had growing up angst before...*shudder* |

I enjoyed this issue for what it is, Mark getting a serious beat down. It also goes to show just how bad Mark's dad is. He doesn't care about all of the destruction and death he is causing as a result of the fight. I also love the fact that Mark stands up to his father. He does not back off, and he does not quit.
The ending was very good. Does Mark win? With his father flying into space and crying does this mean that he will hange his mind? Or is this because of the loss of his son? I can see this meaning a lot of different things in the future. Either way, it is awesome. I cannot wait for the next issue.

I find it kinda odd that Kirkman has asked for fans to stick with this. I mean outloud, in an interview and in the comic's letter page he seems as if he is afraid his audience is going to hate this new direction...
where I don't see it as a new direction at all, and I love the fact that he has had this planned all along. I love twists, but I HATE it when it's just there for the sake of being there. Maybe it's cause he's relatively new or maybe I'm out of touch with the rest of his audience, I don't think he has anything to worry about. ROBERT, You've already proven you know what you're doing. I'm in this for the long haul, you just keep on doing things they way you want, the audience will be there. (only slow down a bit eh? I can only afford so many comics a month) Pete

I've read positive reviews of earlier "Invincible" issues, before the Guardians of the Globe murders, that praised its fun vibe, calling it "family friendly" and such.
Perhaps it's those reviews, and the impression readers may have coming onto the book after reading them, that he's worried about? Suddenly there's blood & guts in nearly every issue! Brutal violence! And while it's in the same clean style, it's quite different in tone. That said, I love it! |
