Default Comic Book Idol: Play At Home

Didn't make the final cut but still want to play along and show off your work? This is the place to do it.

There are no rules or prizes, so it's up to you to decide whether to meet the deadlines and follow requirements. Keep in mind that some of the judges have promised that they will be taking a look at this thread, so those of you with serious aspirations might be wise to treat this as the real thing. And those of you just wanting to have fun shouldn't be discouraged from participating either, even if you can't meet the deadlines or are unsure of your talent.

So have fun!

the thing that bothers me is when will these judges be looking in here
i mean, during the ongoing competition? after the end of each week's assignment? etc.

Fueled by Pringles and Tortilla chips I just finished my layout sketches, although I'm not sure I understand the last panel of the third page.

So, I need to know what the rules are. Are we allowed to post thumbnails, wips or finished drawings here ahead of the deadline? Or how does it work?

Play at Home CBI has no real rules, other than the standard board and forum rules. You can post whatever you want.

You probably shouldn't expect the judges to comment on the play at home stuff (though they may very well), but just know they are watching.

I hear ya...in my opinion, descriptively, that last panel is not set up very well.

a) First off, the writer wants her off panel, yet wants to show her hands charged with energy. Kinda unusal, but it can easily be drawn.

b) The impression is that this is from the comache's POV, since it indicates that "Aspen shoots a blast from her water powers off panel at 'us' ". Yet we need to show the shot coming off panel, with the exception of Aspen's hands? From a far away distance?

I guess it can still be pulled off - it would mean that the copter would have to have descended closer to the destroyed beach house in order to depict the scene to show Aspen's hands in it. To me, that's not a very dynamic way to approach it. It would be better to either show it from Aspen's persepctive firing up (which would detract somewhat from the spectacular salvo shot being called for), or not worry about the hands at all and show the copter just getting pulverzed.

But beyond that...the rest of the plot is fine ;)

Aspen shoots a blast from her water powers off panel at us. Both of her hands are supercharged with Blue energy from the blast as she unleashes a death blow to the Comanche helicopter. This is our closing salvo so make it spectacular!
The way I read the panel is that Apsen is not off panel. She is in panel and shots a water beam at the helicopter which is off panel.

Hmmm...still doesn't read that way to me. If the helicopter is meant to be off panel, then wouldn't it be easier to say:

" Aspen shoots a blast from her water powers at the helicopter off panel"

instead of:

"Aspen shoots a blast from her water powers off panel at us" ?

Either way, it'll be interesting to see how the competitors interpret the panel.

I think the thing that may be confusing people is the "off panel at us."

I think Vince wrote this to indicate that he wants Aspen facing the reading as she is shotting her water beam.

Vince has posted on the Round 1 thread that people can contact him (even non finalists) if they have questions about the script.

That's how I read it, too, Brandon.

Here's my question. I know that professional artists often do not slavishly follow even a full-script with panel descriptions, changing things for pacing, layout, clarity, etc. If one of the contestants makes such a change, will they get a big ol' smackdown for their deviation?

I agree Escapegoat, that description has me confused a bit as well.
