Marvel seems to have hit a homerun by replacing the classic Black Panther with a young woman named Shuri who happens to be his little sister. We needed a new heroine with a new background. The sky can be the limit for this character she has a nation behind her, all the advice her big bro can offer and a definite Marvel icon as a sister-in-law. What other villains should she encounter (Selene, Mystique, Viper, Serpant Society)? What will her relationship be with her family? Will she try to keep title when T'Challa recovers?

Define homerun.
02/09 Black Panther #1 - 52,991 (+57.6%) 03/09 Black Panther #2 - 33,755 (-36.3%) 04/09 Black Panther #3 - 33,356 ( -1.2%) 05/09 Black Panther #4 - 30,984 ( -7.1%) 06/09 Black Panther #5 - 29,762 ( -3.9%) What's her story anyway? |

But I digress... It's still gonna take a bit for me to totally warm up to the idea of Shuri. She was on of the things I really disliked about Hudlin's run. Not that she was a bad character, I just hated how he created her out of thin air, T'Challa never had a younger sister before Hudlin, so that still bugs me. She's been entertaining to read about so far, though she did seem to go from being unsure to being uber confident very quickly, I hope to see more of a learning curve in the future. |

I got them here: http://pwbeat.publishersweekly.com/b...les-june-2009/ And they're also at ICV2.com in less digested form.
And I posted them not as an indicator of quality. More often than not, quality and sales do not often go hand in hand, as evidenced by Jeph Loeb still having a job at Marvel. I just called into question that this is indeed a homerun. To me that would imply that the book is doing better than before. Anyway, Shuri, why would I want to buy her book, considering the writer hasn't changed. No snark intended. Sell me on this book. |

Actually the writer has changed, Hudlin wont be writing Black Panther anymore Johnathan Mayberry is the current writer of the series. The book also seems to be taking a much more political tone in a similar vein as what Priest did just without the disjointed storytelling humor (at least that what it seems like so far).

I haven't read anything by him yet, but he's got a Bram Stoker Award... And I do like more political stuff.
What was his first issue? |

It's unlikely my shop will have any, since I haven't seen a Black Panther issue since Civil war.
But I'll keep an eye out for the trade. |

As some one who couldn't get into Hudlin's writing AT ALL, the BP relaunch has been a damn good read.

And I suspect it will be hard to sell you on this book. From your post it appears you only want to read books with High sales. From the same PBW site--Here are some encouraging numbers Quote:

I have nothing against the character, but I agree with Kaspar Cole that I didn't like the way she was introduced. Most of Hudlin's retcons of Wakanda were either cosmetic or easily ignored, but introducing new siblings is rather extreme.
But it isn't just Hudlin. I also really hated it when Scott Lobdell introduced Sunfire's sister, Sunpyre. You know, Sunfire, the guy we've met and interacted with fifty times over the last thirty years; Japan's most prominent hero; who's mother died during childbirth after being exposed to the radiation of Hiroshima; who was raised as a terrorist by his crazy uncle; who is the cousin of Wolverine's greatest love. He had a sister. He just never thought to mention it. Arrrgh. All that said, I am willing to be convinced that Shuri is a good character in her own right. I have heard good things, so who knows. Let's just hope she lasts longer than Sunpyre did. HIndsight lad |

Never seen this one before. People diss him because he can't write and acts like a troll on his own boards.

Similar to Phyla-Vell from the Captain Marvel books, I didn't particular find the character likable. I like the BP book in general right now... but the lead character is didn't particularly wow me.
That said, I'm willing to give her a shot. If nothing else, she looks pretty cool. |
