Default Immortal Weapons #5 - The Prince of Orphans - Spoilers & Discussion

(Trying something new this week - minimal intro posts, just to get things started)

IMW #5, by Lapham and Lozzi (backup by Swierczynski and Diaz), out today . . .

Iron Fist fights a K'un-Lun dragon while John Aman fights an army of ancient Chinese ghost warriors. It's more or less solid action, once it gets rolling, and it's a lot of fun. Much better than the Tiger's Beautiful Daughter issue, although not very meaty in terms of an origin for the Prince. I didn't love the monochromatic coloring for the ghosts, but the art was otherwise spot on.

In the backup, everything more or less works out for Danny and Jada, but the art is . . . still a very poor fit.

So it's more or less the same level of disappointment that the previous Immortal Weapon installments have turned out to be?

And i'm sorry, the Danny/Jada/lil brother stuck in the sewer action packed backup is doing zippo for me.

Slightly less. It was fairly inessential, but it was well executed and fun in places.

Pretty much, yeah.

I can't remember the last time a series that initially sounded so good let me down so utterly badly.

Maybe that Omega Flight garbage.

Did we get any hints about John Aman's origin/motivations at all, or was it entirely a present day story?

A few hints. He seems to view himself as something of a guardian of the boundary between the living and the dead, and we get some little bits of insight into how his powers relate to that.

The story itself takes place more or less entirely in the present, though.

Yeah it was a nice little self-contained story, but very little more than that. The art was very good, but I agree that some of the colouring let it down. I liked that Lapham actually gave Danny something to do, unlike what Duane S. has with his awful backup story, though his characterisation of Danny as more of Spider-Man like wisecracker seemed a bit off.

I also like that Aman's backstory was only slightly hinted at. I think a big part of why Aman is interesting is that we don't know that much about him, which is something that could be applied to the other Weapons, but is especially applicable to the Prince.

In my opinion this was the best issue then Fat Cobra's issue..n the reason why his origin and other info about him is not released much is the character is a secretive weapon..so just giving all his back ground n origin wont help now but rather if we get more stories about him hopefully the interest in the character will grow

Yeah I quite liked the main story. The art was gorgeous (Danny should always be presented as a hottie) and the story was fun. I like quippy danny too.

The back-up was the real disappointment. The art was just not a good fit at all (see 'Danny must = hottie' above). I hope we get some more down the road. Another mini?

I really enjoyed the main feature here. The Prince bringing Danny in to slay a dragon while he begins a fight against 10,000 soldiers' spirits was pretty cool. You got the big epic super powered fight with Fist and the one against an army Kung Fu action with the Prince of Orphans, and here the Prince proves that his Kung Fu is quite strong. Great work by Lozzi here on pencils, he hit some really dynamic angles in the Prince's big fight, and did a great job showing the scale of the threat Danny was facing down as well. Each felt as epic as they needed to, be it fighting one giant dragon in the wilderness,or fighting an army that is filling the city streets.

The art really didn't work for me here at all. Where did Travel Foreman's pencils go? His work isn't always entirely to my liking (sometimes it really comes down to who is inking for him) but I much rather see him with Duane than what we got for the last 3 parts of the mini series.

Overall I'd say I enjoyed this mini, though I don't know how much it will help Fist's chances of getting a new series next year. If nothing else we got some fun stories with a supporting cast of characters I wanted to see more from.

Prince is a beast. I really like his powers. He actually makes wearing a big brown rug look pretty cool.

Pretty good, though, as with Bride's issue, they seemed kind of stuck between a series that took as its premise character origins and the idea that the character works better with minimal explanation (though this has a much better story than Bride's did).

My ranking of the issues:

1. Fat Cobra
2. Tiger's Beautiful Daughter
3. Dog Brother #1
4. Prince of Orphans
5. Bride of Nine Spiders

The last one was the only one I found to be really disappointing; the first was the great one.
