I like to think that, while working up the character designs, maintaining the integrity of Nightwing's ass was a high priority, like Power Girl's boobs.
Also, why is Robin kicking Clark Kent in the crotch in one of those pictures? |

And given how much artists can vary, again, I think the conclusions being drawn are mainly because comparatively not that many male asses are "seen" in Big 2 comics. All those guys with capes. All those alien looking characters, or as you say, plenty of muscle guys (the artists usually don't even BOTHER to show their butts if they are big land-locked tanks). Or guys like The Flash, where he may not have a cape, but he's hardly shown in any pose but upright and from the side (never from the back and never squatting, right?) And guys who fly, cape or no cape? Rarely have a reason to "squat" (only the roof-leapers do). But now that its been pointed out, I'm sure the moment he ditches the cape, future artists will make sure the ass is indeed front and center. So in the end (ehem) it will all work out for fans of his ass.
