If you haven't been keeping up with current events, it's been reported that the teen focused vampire movie New Moon grossed a whopping $140 million this weekend. That falls only $18 million behind the record holder of The Dark Knight of $158 million. For those wondering what X2 did, it's domestic opening day gross was a disappointing $86 million - almost half of New Moon's opening gross.
What's more embarrassing is that 80 percent of New Moon's viewers were girls and moms of those girls. And although the X-Men franchise has no written boundaries on who supports it, being superheroes, they typically gravitate more towards boys and men. Does this mean that women show a higher support for something they like over men? ...Not necessarily. But the numbers tell all in this case. I will say it's safe to assume there will be a 3rd installment of the Twilight series, which I have no doubt that it will probably blow X3 out of the park. Does it matter at this point? Probably not... I'm merely doing a comparison on popular franchise between girls and boys, and the support either sex shows based on a franchise specifically targeting that sex. Before any of you accuse me of being sexist, my question is this: Sexual targeting aside, does it upset you as an X-Men fan that this franchise is doing better?

yes and no. The two demographics are night and day. Prepubescent/tween girls, and boys/men of all ages for X-men. The former demographic is really not catered to as much when it comes to film, so it's not shocking that it did so well. Even though it's sub-par, and X2 was my favorite film in the trilogy!

Wasn't Dark Knight a "boy's movie?" Doesn't that undercut your "point" a bit?

I don't think I could possibly care less. Box office takes are hardly a reflection on quality and like you said, teenage girls represent a ton of buying power. Remember the success of the boybands and Britney Spears?
Oh and the best X-Men movie is the first one anyway.
