So the "original" Legion of Superheroes is back more or less with one little change: the future is now one of xenophobia against aliens on earth, a holdover from Geoff Johns' storyline from Action Comics. At the time it seemed it was just a recent thing caused by Earthman and his Justice League, but now it seems to be an ongoing thing in the future, as evidenced in Superman Secret Origin and Legion of Three Worlds. To me this indicates a fundamental lack of understanding by Geoff Johns of the world of the Legion. While the Legion did have their problems with Earthgov, for the most part it was a utopian future. The basis of the LSH is being a teen superhero and going into the future to have adventures with other teen superheroes. It's idyllic fantasy on top of idyllic fantasy. Not to mention it's supposed to be the great result of Superman's efforts. Not any more.

Just goes to show that even with shiny flying cars and all the wonders of technology, people can become worse.
Looking at the choices, the OP seems to be trying to conduct the comic bbs version of a push poll. Last edited by CYOTI; 11-23-2009 at 10:53 AM. |

I voted "Hate It: If I Wanted This I'd Read The X-men".
So boring really, so Marvel'ish... |

Yeah, I'm not going to participate in a poll where the answers and reasons don't match up.
I 'love it', not because I 'need problems' but because this version of the Legion had the best history, the best world building, and the best characters and character development (villains and heroes) of any Legion ever. I want it because it was the most creative era of the Legion in history, and all those concepts and characters still reside there. So none of the above. |

I voted that I hate it (because I do), but not because of any parallel to the X-Men. I just don't like why it exists, how it got here, and just the general lack of originality in it all.

Frankly, it could do with a bit more X-manizing.

Quoted for truth. No, I'm not overly wild about the "Aliens Go Home!" aspect of it, but it's still the Legion I grew up with, the Legion I want, the Legion they never should've retconned away in the first place. 'Sides, Levitz arrives in another two or three issues and I'm hoping he'll just quietly sweep most if not all of the All Terrans Are Xenophobes storyline off into a closet somewhere and forget about it.

The xenophobia is part and parcel of what's going on in the Superman books with "New Krypton". All Johns is doing is showing us how that was an impact on the future. And seeing that members of the LoSV are in the 21st century causing problems, my guess is that it's a plan to bring about a future such as this.

You can still have a utopian future and still be Xenophobic. There were other Legion worlds that suffered form Xenophobia in the Legion, it's just that this time it's Earth (and just a smaller population).

I didn't vote because I don't agree with any of the choices.
I'm okay with the xenophobic-future idea. Johns didn't invent it, after all; he borrowed it from the reboot Legion. The struggle of diversity versus xenophobia is a theme that fits the Legion very well and to me it seems a little strange that Legion comics weren't written with this in mind all along. And I think it's a plus to have the Legion be about something other than just "being a superhero team".

Fantastic stuff. I have no problem with the xenophobia part, as prejudice is part an parcel with humanity as a whole, and I just don't buy that everyone in the future will be that enlightened. Besides, its not as if everyone is xenophobic.
As far as the Legion itself, equally great. These are the more interesting versions of the Legion, and even though I did enjoy aspects of the other Legions, this is my favorite simply because they seem to have developed into something really interesting. Johns does a great job in coming up with great stories that incorporate the rich history of whatever characters he is working on, rather than ignoring it. |
