We keep getting hinted time and time again that whales & dolphins are evolutionary equal or in some cases superior to us.

Lets say one day that ETs publically reveal themselves to earth, bypass us and instead want to talk to the big marine mammals. They can communicate in ways we comprehend, they're merely not interested in us and will adress us only to ask for our help in locating more whales.

Do you think we could we get over our egos as being the dominant race?

"They really seem to be making up for lost time with this thumb thing," said Dr. Jim Kuczaj, a University of California–San Diego biologist who has studied the seasonal behavior of dolphins for more than 30 years. "Last Friday, a crude seaweed-and-shell abacus washed up on the beach near Hilo, Hawaii. The next day, a far more sophisticated abacus, fashioned from some unknown material and capable of calculating equations involving numbers of up to 16 digits, washed up on the same beach. The day after that, the beach was littered with thousands of what turned out to be coral-silicate and kelp-based biomicrocircuitry."

Given the opposable thumbs and bio/micro-circuit tech upgrades for whalekind (I'll allow it), I would assume that any culinary plans based on dolphin are going to end pretty badly.

After getting over our surprise and the blow to our collective ego, humanity's pragmatic opportunism instincts assert themselves. We'll treat them like tourists and bilk them out of everything we can in exchange for our help locating whales. Even if they give us stuff that's used and obselete by their standards it should bump us up a few tech levels and make us better off.
