Default 32% Inflation in UCLA Tuition Causes Near Riots (14 arrested, 1 tasered)

So let's get the facts straight. The state takes money from taxpayers to pay for college education. Now state says, "hey, students, we can't take more money, so, we're gonna have to charge you guys more money." The students get angry and protest.

I don't feel for them, I do crazy stuff. However, I've never been arrested or TASED. They shouldn't have done whatever they did that got them arrested and TASED. I feel for the medic that had to treat the SOB that got tased, that's a lot of paperwork.

Yes because protesting tuition rates is EXACTLY like protesting the Vietnam War.

Students, a group not known for deep pockets and financial stability, got angry and protested because of a massive increase in money they have to pay.

How DARE they.

True. The alternative is to dramatically roll back the classes offered (as they've done at the college I attend). If I understand right, though, this increase won't affect most students.

A better question woul be how much of an understanding do those in power have about the financial status of students.

Said status being "what's money?", in many cases.

Unfortunately, you failed to "get the facts straight." It wasn't an issue of taking more money from the taxpayers (i.e. increasing funding for higher education). Rather, state funding in California for higher education has been dramatically cut each of the past two years.

Now, you might think the students are in the wrong either way. But that doesn't justify you substituting a fictional scenario (students are upset that their tuition is going up because the government is maintaining the status quo in public funding) in place of the actual scenario (students are upset that their tuition is going up because the government massively cut higher education funding).

There are a lot of budget cuts, but some sector of the budget aren't being cut as sharply. So students may feel that a disproportionate share of the burden is going into tuition bills.

I think sarcasm ought to be reserved for when one's opponent is clearly ridiculous wrong. It took me just a few minutes to find the last three California state budgets, so I don't think you did the minimum due diligence one should expect before sarcasm like that is unleashed.

Unfortunately, Wolverine escaped to the U.S. with the X-Men. Soon after this stunning debacle, Trudeau's Liberal Party would go down to defeat in the May 1979 election.

yeah?

so can you explain why the state would go as far as to cut/reduce funding in higher education?
