Gaia's Quest: A Magical Animal RPG

For some, it was like the passing scent of a dying animal. For others, it was strong, like the first chill of winter or the gentle vibration of the earth before it begins to shake violently. But all soon understood that something was different, something had changed and the world was changing with it. Not just the world, for they too had changed.

For those whose’ lives were touched by the strange creatures who call themselves Man, this change became even more obvious. The stone, wood and metal lairs of these creatures were now empty. The great metallic beasts they control are now still and silent, only a lonely wind moves down their pathways.

The sun has risen and set several times before you hear a voice calling to you. You look up to see a winged creature, an Owl, looking down at you. Though you cannot detect its scent, your other senses tell you it is real.

All over the world, in every place where the creatures of the earth reside, this ancient creature, this Owl, speaks the same words. “The balance has been disrupted, we are all in danger. If we do nothing, we will all die. I need your help; the great Earth Mother needs your help. Will you come forward? Come to me and save us all.”

Most of the creatures turn their back on this plea, but a few do not….

Gibbs tromped off into the brush without looking back at the owl, heading for the river that would refresh him.

He finished the drink, and headed back to where the owl was still waiting patiently.
"What do I need to do?"

Kadin had been running, where he didn't know, just as far as his small paws would take him from where he was. There was cackling of two Hyena's just behind him in what was once a proud human city. The cub's luck had went from good and finding some food, to horrible when two hungry Hyena's happened to find the lone Tiger cub and happened to be hungry. What easier way for a snack?

Skidding briefly to a halt, Kadin made a desperate dash to under what used to be a fully functional van. Neither of the other two predators were able to reach him there just yet, but they weren't going to get up that easily. The leader of the two Hyena was missing their right eye in the shape of a X scar but instead of being frustrated, they seemed patient.

After all, the cub had to come out eventually.

Hannah had been standing on the edge of a sky scraper, surveying the city. She'd been hoping to find something, anything, that would indicate what happened to the humans. Maybe they did something stupid and got themselves killed. Maybe something attacked them. She would have believed that.

But there was nothing. No bodies, no hint of frantic activity. They were just... gone. For the first time since she noticed how different she felt, she had an dark inkling, a sinking feeling in her chest.

Her master was gone. And there was no way she could find him. Just before resigning herself to this knowledge, she heard the call of the owl. The sinking feeling was replaced with a rising sense of hope. Even if her master was beyond her reach, perhaps this owl would know what exactly happened...

The cougar lay unmoving against the rocks, his muscles, no longer capable of supporting his weight. His belly was empty and his throat was a rough as bark, but he did not care. He cared little that death was approaching, for he had lost everything, and wanted nothing more than to be claimed by the final sleep, as his loved ones had been claimed.

But alas, his wish was not to be. He had heard the fluttering before he registered the approach, his first thoughts being that death had come of wings to carry him away. But when the visitor spoke, he knew it was not to be.

"You have been summoned," it simply, and weakened as he was, the cougar had barely the strength to turn his head and gaze at the owl.

"Pitiful creature, what do you want?"

"You have been summoned," the owl said once more before continuing. "The earth mother Gaia, has requested your help."

"I know of no mother, and I am in no state to help anyone, not even my own family," the cougar lamented before turning his head from the owl once more. "Now please, leave me to die in peace."

"I can not do that oh brave warrior, for you are needed."

"So you've said, repeatedly I might add. But I have no heart to help anyone. I wish only to enjoy the final sleep so I may see my family once more."

"I know you grieve the loss of your family, but this crisis threatens the entire world. You must help."

"My world is already gone. It died when my family were butchered by those humans. Why should I care if the planet dies too?"

"Because, the loss and grief that you suffer, will be visited upon untold families if you do not. Do you wish your grief to be suffered by others when you can prevent it?"

"But I have no strenght to move, I..."

"You do have the strength, you simply did not have the will." And with that, the owl departed, leaving the dispondent cougar to ponder his words.

Khan glared at the owl, decided to follow. The Owl had best make this worth his time or he would eat the bird for a small breakfast. He tracked through the snow covered forest

Max whimpered. His family was gone. All the giant two leggers he called brother, sister, mama, papa. Gone. And Max despaired.

Max's tail wagged. At first he wanted to chase the owl but then he realized he knew the sounds it was making. The same sound the two leggers made but he could never decipher, except his own name. Now he knew every word. And he spoke.

"Yes! I'll help! I'm a good boy! I love to help! Will you help me find my family?"

But then the owl was gone. Well, that was easy, he just needed to find it. But the owl had no scent! Max despaired.

Duke raised his eyes to look at the Owl.

"Where's my master?"

Duke shook his head, trying to clear it. It been days since his master and his family disappeared, leaving Duke alone. He'd went into town in the hopes of finding them, but they weren't there either. Maybe this owl knew where they were.

"I don't care about your 'earth mother,' balance, or anything else you mentioned, but if it will me find out where my master went to, then I will help you," he said.

Miley slithered across the ground, her tongue darting forward.

She licked the air, and started her hunt. She could find heat later, she needed food right now to survive.

She heard something, in her mind.

<Hello! I'm scared!>

Miley moved in, and saw a small looking rodent.

<Something's wrong! I feel weird!> The rodent told her, it scurried up.

<Can you help me!?> The young voice, the panicked, innocent, voice asked her.

Miley struck, her venom pumping into the rodent.

And she looked for a place that was still warm.

The chill of the mist that clung to the earth and the wetness of the morning dew clung to his fur. Although the day was the same, it was, at the same time, as if he witnessed it for the first time in his life. Confusion assaulted his thoughts, only before his attention was directed towards the owl, perched upon the bamboo, who gave its message.

"...Mother...Earth?"

The concept was new to him, yet at the same time, he could see how one could call the land their mother. This place was important to him. Glancing back up to the owl, he answered, "...if my assistance is needed, I shall help."

Meshindi was chewing whatever vegetation he could found and soon it would look like he was going to miss everything. His regular meal was gone and it didn't to want to come back. He stayed in his old habitat as long as possible, but soon he had been force to move out of safety of the zoo only to found even more desolation, but apparently there was a place name Central Park were a lot of animals had found a place to eat, he would be glad to settle anywhere. He didn't like the change, he heard the owl, couldn't see where it was.

Should he go...he was looking for a way to save himself. He didn't answer, he had to consider his options.

:pippin the Rat was enjoying himself, sicn ethe dman Giants were gone, he had access to all their yummy, yummy food, and considering he was among the smartest of his brood, helped in other departments a she was elected leader amongst his scurvy vemrin brethern. Though as he was enjoyin g apatorl of what was a crowded city street, he heard osmething.;

"Help Us, The Earth Mother needs your help."

:Pippin proceeded to look up and behold, a giant owl, TALKING to him.:

"Holy Hell! You got to be the biggest dman owl I ahve ever seen! And you, tlak? TO me? Well, i gues sbetter than you eatting me. Help hmm?"

"Well I'm your man. I, Pippin, elade rof the Whtie Lab Rats, shall help my Earth Mother out." :As pippin knew, the Earth was alive, of some sort of instict, it had to be alive, to support life, yet a sthe ideas flowe dthorugh his tiny body, he was getting used to the ide aof casulity. Of death, that someday he will die, and tha tsome day, evne the world may die. Well, he doe sno twant to happen.:

"SO what shall I do ohh Snowy One."

:As the other Rat slooked to him like he were mad.:

(And yeah Pippin is the Rat that sounds full of hismelf, and has a thick, Scottish accent for sheer annoynace.)
