Default X Men Legacy #229, detailed review and detailed spoilers

X Men Legacy review by JAU

OK, so Rogue is trying to rescue Bling! From Emplate’s extra dimensional hideout and as a result she has absorbed Trance’s powers. But it isn’t that straightforward! She is being chased by ghosts.

Gambit is pissed of at Scott for putting Rogue in danger. As Rogue continues her mission, Gambit goes on one of his own. His mission will push him down a dark road that will shock X-Fans everywhere!

OK, that’s enough spoilers, here is my review:

The art is really good as you would expect.

Also, the writing is really good, if you haven’t read them I would recommend you pick up Mike Carey’s Felix Castor novels.

Recommended to all Legacy fans!

EDIT however it appears that people that have read the book feel it is a little slow

This was fun. I love Acuna's redesign of Death Gambit. It is a lot more Gambit and a lot less creepy long-haired mess.

Rogue and Bling! teaming up at the end of the issue was pretty exciting. I can't wait to see how it ends.

Great review, told me everything I needed to know. Where should one start with the Felix Castor series?

Probably the first book The Devil You Know, although I started with one of the later ones Thicker Than Water and had no problem working out what was happening.

I hope she becomes part of Rogue's supporting cast. She's going to be Rogue's Flash Thompson.

I agree with what Topor said in Cress, her outfit didn't need a belt.

It didn't, but I completely thought that was Tabby!

Thank you very much. I'll go see if my library has a copy on the morrow. And please can all reviewers follow just another user's writing template from now on (apart from Josef).

I'm really liking this storyline and it is making me go up into my attic and pull all of the Gen X books with Empate in it. He is such a creepy, scary character that needs more panel time.

I'm loving Ariel and her fashion sense. Carey really knows how to use 2nd and 3rd rate characters to move his stories along and make it feel organic.

I never thought I would like Bling! but she is also a pleasant surprise. I hope Carey continue to use her after this arch.

Rogue is still Consistently great and I don't mind the sub-plot Gambit is having. I wonder if Warren can sense that Remy is another Death avatar/

The Art is beatiful and Daniel Acuna should be commended for puting out great work monthly even if he had a head start to keep on schedule.
He even makes Scott New X-Men uniform looks great. But I kinda hate Gambit new costume mainly because of the green coat.

Story 9
Art 9
overall 9

GET CAREY OVER INTO THE MAIN BOOK

Solicits like the one for this issue make me want to stop reading comics. While perfectly competent and with some very nice art, nothing happened in this issue. It ends at the same place the last issue ended- Rogue in trouble in Emplate's house. Couldn't the space ghosts have been cut out and the story gone straight to a confrontation with Emplate? Nothing happened to Gambit that hasn't happened already in the annual. Is he going to stay in Death from? Do we have to wait till January to find out?

This decompression has been a major problem for me with Legacy ever since it changed its name. Stories that could be done in 2 issues take 4, and all momentum and interest is sucked out of what otherwise might be a perfectly decent story. It's a very frustrating book to read.

And since when has Gambit been a controlling, patronizing boyfriend who thinks Rogue is some damsel in distress? From all their acquaintance, as far as I can recall, he's never questioned or doubted her ability to look after herself, even after she lost the Ms Marvel powers; even three issues ago. It's out of character.

There's a lot of good things going on in this book, but it needs a kick up the arse and if Gambit's going to have an upcoming storyline Carey could do with getting more of a feel for the character.

While I some what agree with u here I can forgive the pace because the characterization is so strong.

As for Gambit I think he is still geting use to Rogue new control over her powers. She would still would just be a normal woman once her barrowed powers end because she can't absorb Empate (a least I don't think she can). Gambit just hoped that Scott was smarter than letting her go off by herself with out back up.

She hasn't been able to hold onto to another mutant's powers for a while now. It doesn't seem as if that much about her power has changed when it's 'on', just that she can turn it off now if she wants. C'mon, Gambit's hardly the Health and Safety Officer of Utopia and he's well used to Rogue doing stupid, impulsive things.

I gloss over Gambit scenes so I'm no authority on his behavioral continuity.

I can hardly fault Professor Carey for doing the same when scripting.

So you want him to just not care that the former love of his life is stuck in a crazy hell-like dimension with a vampire and she may not come back?

Besides, Carey is writing Gambit to keep him relevant because no one else wants to use him. I'm going to forgive any tiny characterization issue that may come up. At least he has lines in a book.
