Default Spider-man and Jiu Jitsu

Frivilous thread, I know.

But I was thinking about the criticism you get of Spidey, that he has no MA training, and my imagined response was, with his crazy attributes, what benefit would he get from such training.

And then I thought, no character in the MU has better attributes for BJJ, his agility, equilibrium, and flexibility, the way his grip should be enhanced by his ability to adhere to surfaces with his hands and feet.

It's common Spidey fight choreography to have Spidey leap over the heads of opponants. He could drop onto their backs, put his hooks in and sink a choke with a quickness. He'd be pretty much impossible to get off.

Okay, back to work, lol.

This is a cool idea.

Wasn't there a villain named Jiu Jitsu? Maybe in an old Hostess ad?

This was sort of addressed with the last regular issue of Ultimate Marvel Team Up, where Spidey was asking Shang Chi for some martial arts training. Cap's also tried to help him with this in the 616.

I think there was a sidekick in the Dick Tracy cartoon named Joe Jitsu.

June Jitsu, and she's exactly who I thought of when I saw this topic.

Of course that may have just been because I read a old back issue that had that add in it just the other day.

Now as for the topic itself, Spider-man doesn't strike me as he type that would train to fight simply because in his mind he thinks that he does pretty good already and only has so much time in the day after all (and usually not enough of that.)

Yeah, but he's a smart guy. He'd do it if he realized training might actually save his bacon one day.

Yeah, but before anything like that happens, he'd have to get his butt totally handed to him by somebody using martial arts and he'd just make it out of there alive.

Peter learns from his mistakes, (usually) but he tends to have to blunder into making them first.

Yep, I'd have to agree.

Man, that would make a great arc though, wouldn't it? Who do you think Spidey would go to for training these days? Iron Fist would probably my first guess. Maybe Shang-Chi?

Ironfist of Shang Chi would be the ideal, but I could easily see Spidey not knowing how to get ahold of them, and if they can't help, he'd likely go to either Wolverine (and Wolverine would never let him live that down) or Daredevil.

Daredevil could even point him towards Stick or Elektra for help.

I totally forgot about DD! He'd be an awesome trainer. Wolverine would be okay, but I can't see Spider-Man working with Elektra. She's too amoral for his liking, I'd think.

Most likely, he'd go to Wolverine or Daredevil since he's fairly close to them. Iron Fist is also a possibility. A more off-beat choice would be Wong.

Even if Spidey didn't know where Iron Fist is right this second, he knows someone who probably does-Luke Cage! I really don't think finding Danny would be a big deal for him. Shanf Chi probably would be harder to locate.

As for Stick, I believe he's currently dead, and he'd probably wouldn't agree to train Peter anyhow. Elektra....not too sure about her willingness to help out, to be honest.

Stick is supposed to be dead, but that hasn't stopped him from showing up and helping out with no explination before.

Spidey actually gets flak for his fighting style? "Trained" or not, he's got the coolest fighting style. Freestyle!
