Default Is it theoretically possible for good guy to end up with orange ring?

The question is purely theoretical (though related to a tournament match I had on the other comics-themed site).
Does the ambition to eradicate all the evil in the world by himself counts as greed thus making a character suitable for Orange Lantern corps (providing that said character is not greedy in money-hungry ways- he\she doesn't give a damn about money)?

I think Booster Gold would be a candidate for sure. I think the greed thing is about taking as ones own for the benefit of yourself. To be Selfish instead of selfless

^To put ones own needs in primacy above all others in contrast to the giving up of self for the greater good that we see in the Indigo tribe.

No hero can become an Orange Lantern because of the simple fact that Larfleeze DOES NOT share it's power with others. He is guardian, avatar and corpsman combined.

If a hero got eaten by a construct, then it's possible.

In order to gain the Organge Ring you must be among the greediest beings in the universe...

I don't think that can be achieved without sacrificing morality... Even so once you come into possession of the ring insatiable Greed will consume you...

Except that his selfishness is an act now. He is selfless.

The only way you could get the orange ring is if you were so greedy you were wiling to kill Larfleeze to get it. I don't see what wanting to eradicate evil has to do with greed, which is the need to consume and possess things.

In the sense that many people believe that every act that a person does is selfish in some way--I can see what you mean. I think it would be difficult as a primary motivating factor and you'd probably become an "ends justify the means" person, but I think it's possible to be non-evil and orange...

"The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you very much."

If it's greed personified by Ayn Rand, then, no good guy could get an orange ring. (One of her ideal men was a serial killer, no less).

I'd like a citation on this. Because if I can verify this I have a neighbor I'd like to tell.

There's not really any subtle positive context for having an orange ring. Avarice is a mortal sin in the non-comic world (to those of that faith), and I can't think of a single good hearted person who would be okay with being thought of as greedy. I suppose one could be greedy and consequently heroic (like Odysseus was for glory) but I can't think of anyone in the DCU with their established character that would work for.

Perhaps one can be greedy and heroic, but not greedy and super-heroic.

That would be the aspect to play up, I think. Have the hero nobly struggle to keep his greedy impulses in check, and in favor of the greater good. (As we saw with Hal, the orange lantern magnifies one's greed.)

EDIT: Potential candidate--Mr. Terrific. That situation would play to his intelligence, i.e. reason vs. emotion, and y'know, "Fair Play"--not just a cool slogan for your jacket.

That would be a struggle worth reading about and truthfully, I wouldn't doubt Geoff Johns' ability to write such a tale (after Blackest Night of course).

Hal can conquer fear, but greed, even the innate greed to procure that which is vital to survive. That urge on steroids from proximity to the Orange Lantern would be a good conflict. Larfleeze is kind of wimpy though, and the Green Lantern wouldn't have to be Hal, but I wonder how we would be able to capture and detain Hal or Guy or John or even Kilowog.
