Default Is it worth buying Spiderman pre-OMD?

Besides like the Omnibus or the Essentials, I mean. I've been looking to get back into Spidey, but the thing is I don't want to get accustomed to the idea of Peter & MJ's marriage and then have the distaste of it essentially never happening, thus ruining stories I might've liked.

What do you think?

The Pre-OMD stories, with the 40 years of rich history, are the best in the series. Better to invest in them than anything since Civil War.

If you want to know about Peter Parker, do Pre-OMD. If you want prefer to read about this new guy with the same name and no resemblance in personality or values to the original, then start fresh with what is available today.

There is also the issue that at some point, perhaps 10 years or more down the road, the marriage somehow will be restored. It is as certain as Norman Osborn coming back to life. That might be a factor in your calculations.

Yeah, I mean they're good stories. They've retconned/ignored a lot of Morrison's X-men run, but that doesn't make his run any less awesome.

And throwing out stuff like Morrison's run, flawed as it was, is why superhero comics will never be as popular as they once were. I wonder if we'll eventually see a focus on other types of comics (non superhero) with Disney in charge?

The first 10-12 issues of JMS's run was really good.

I personally really enjoyed the books Erik Larson did in the early 90's.

Well, you know how things end up, so I think it will not be such a problem. Go read any stories and just enjoy them for what they are.

I would basically ignore Civil War, Back in Black, and One More Day unless you just want to read them for the hell of it. These won't affect anything pre-Civil War or Post-OMD.

Was Back in Black bad? I've never really read it, but I have read CW.

Pretty much sums up the current Spider-Man books

Well, I've read most of Stracynski's stuff but Sins Past really left a bad taste in my mouth and I kinda quit comics for a while after that. I think ASM #36 is one of the best comics ever written.

No, but it feels pointless now because of OMD.

Get the first 250 issues of ASM and the first 100 issues of Spectacular Spider-Man.

After that just read BND to present.

If you want to read them, read them. There's nothing like firsthand experience.

I loosely agree with this.

BND is a great jumping-on point and nothing prior to it should be necessary. That's the point of it in a sense. So I'd suggest just reading those.

There are many great stories in the past that are worth reading and picking up Essentials is a good thing to do, eventually at least.

Broadly speaking (of course there are many exceptions) the last 20 years of Spider-Man can be skipped without missing all that much, in terms of things necessary to help your understanding, or in terms of quality.
