one of my coworkers was adamant that "even though tigers are way cooler than lions, the male lion would always win. when they're not bumming around being a useless piece of shit all they do is fight. the mane, and everything, it's all bit around fighting other lions or attacking other animals. tigers are built for stalking and hunting, and besides being cooler, just can't stack up to a lion in a fight."
the counter-argument from the other guy was that tigers are bigger, and more adept at hunting. "sure, tigers are more awesome, but check it out on youtube, the lion always wins in the end" so, is it possible for the tiger to win? or is it pretty much a guaranteed victory for the lion on account of the mane? could a blood-lusted tiger actually defeat a lion? |

pretty sure the general answer is the male Lion is better built for actually fighting another big cat, since that's one of their primary purposes in a pride, assuming there's not a huge difference in size.

Honestly the mane gets brought up a lot but it really is a gigantic advantage, as it protects the Lion's neck, throat, ears and shoulders from both biting and paw strikes.

To answer your question, yes, a tiger could defeat a lion, and sometimes have in captivity. In general, though, your coworker is right.

Well, I don't know how scientifically accurate they are, but Discovery says the lion wins.

THis has been done twice already.
LIONS win. They are built to fight other male lions, which are heavier than Tigers i nmuscle mass, and their mane's shield their vital areas from attack. Wihle Tigers do not have so much.

No.....
Not to that extent. It's more like 6 out of 10 to the lion. |

Well, in the wild it probably would go like that, mostly because tigers are less likely to risk a confrontation with another powerful predator - not having a pride of lionesses to hunt for it if it gets wounded and all.

Eh, some Lion prides are actually pretty adept Elephant hunters. And Rhinos would make terrible predators due to how bad their eyesight is.
