Default Inside DC With Dan Didio (Batman relevant), GOOD STUFF!!!

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?p...ticle&id=23684

While reading this i found something quite interesting.

Speaking of characters who are a bit away from their core conceit, we've got Batman. Someone on staff pointed out to me that there are already multiple Green Lanterns in the DCU and multiple Flashes. With Dick proving so popular, could we get to the point in the future where even if Bruce came back, there could be two Batmen?
.................................................. .................................................. ..............................
There were two Batmen when we had a couple of worlds going at the same time. And that, honestly, is one of the cruxes of the storylines that will be playing out in 2010. Everybody has their opinions on it, and there are going to different ways we're attempting to explore and build the franchise. There's a lot of ground we're covering that we haven't explored with Dick Grayson as a character yet that we want to get to. There's a lot of excitement there. We didn't want to get away from that story too quickly. We know there's a lot of fun to be had with Bruce Wayne as well, but I think we really want to enjoy Dick Grayson in that costume as much as possible.

The fun thing about Dick Grayson for me is...Hey! I got to kill Nightwing without actually doing it! [Laughs] No, the fun part about Dick Grayson as Batman is that the germ of the idea came from the fans themselves. It came from the concept of the near-miss death of Nightwing. When there was such a fan outcry about Nightwing possibly dying, the question went back to them immediately: why? Why did everybody care all of the sudden? Why was everybody excited? What I found was that a lot of people really embraced him as a character because they watched him grow up with them. He was one of the few characters that actually grew up. My fear was that Dick Grayson was going to get older than Bruce Wayne at some point, but the reality was that Dick Grayson was aging with the fans, and they felt emotionally invested in him as he matured from Robin to Nightwing. That's why they wanted him around. If that was the case, then the most logical step in this maturation process was for him to take on the Batman role. That wasn't done in [the late '90s story] "Prodigal." That was quick in and out. We wanted to really explore this theme and take the time to show Dick and what he was really like as Batman.

And Grant [Morrison] came up with the really wonderful twist which really solidified the whole idea, which was making Damian the new Robin. It flipped the paradigm. He made the Robin the grim, gritty little character and Batman the lighthearted character. So Dick Grayson didn't change at all by putting on the costume, which I think is wonderful, and we still got the same dynamic we had before in a Batman and Robin team.

From Didio's response...

Ugh. I think that this quote from Didio sums up why I've been unhappy with not only the changes in Batman but the entire Didio-driven mess that is the current multiverse. It seems to me that Didio has been using the various DC franchise as his playground and this quote seems to to prove it.

While agree with his analysis on why people were so attached to Dick Grayson (fans having grown up with him and relating to his transformation into Nightwing), what I don't agree with his using that reasoning for morphing Dick Grayson into Batman.

Something that I really loved about the Nightwing character was that he had grown from Batman and while he was still part of the family, he was his own man. He fought crime his way, in his city. He took the lessons from Batman and he became his own man, his own vigilante. While there was never a doubt that in his heart, he would always be a Bat, Nightwing was respected for his merits rather than forever being Batman's protege.

I think the only thing that I've really been okay with as far as Dick Grayson becoming Batman is that when it comes to protecting was Bruce had built as Batman... yes, I can totally believe that Dick would give up his identity as Nightwing to be his own Batman because it was something that Bruce, his father figure, had built.

To me that says, "Okay, you've gone ahead, built your own life. You've done well. You've been respected and rewarded for the person you became on your own. Now that you're done with that, come follow the path that I made for you in the first place." It says a lot about the character of Dick Grayson to be fine with that (and at least, as the fans, we've seen the struggle) but as a plot mechanism, I think it is shoddy.

Meh, he's right though. Everyone's loving him as Batman, so Didio wins.

I never understood why people think this. It would be different if Dick had stuck being a cop (and just a cop), or an artist, or whatever.

"I am my own man, I am Nightwing, rooftop leaping, martial artist, nighttime vigilante, who uses batarangs, as opposed to Robin, rooftop leaping, martial artist, nighttime vigilante, who uses batarangs, and taking up the mantle of Batman, rooftop leaping, martial artist, nighttime vigilante, who uses batarangs, would be a betrayal of my own person."

Seriously, he just changed his mask from domino style to pointy-eared. It's not as if there his life (which gets completely redone every other year anyway) has been completely altered by doing what he has been doing for his entire life.

Exactly. He's realised he was completely wrong about wanting to off Dick and just made a lighthearted crack about the whole thing.

People get awfully bent out of shape about little things.

I really like that Luke Cage doesn't wear a costume. I think it reflects his character better than any costume would. He is who he is 24/7 whatever he's wearing. He will come out and whoop your ass in the middle of the night in his boxers and his wife's bunny slippers and you will still know he's Luke freaking Cage.
