Default Action Comics 883

Ok, here's another quick review of mine!

Main points:

-Jax-Ur is doing genetic experiments whilst pretending to be human and posing as a legit scientist

-Chris and Thara have another short talk about Chris not believing he is the true "Nightwing." Thara tells him that he is, kisses him and all of the sudden he has an aging episode

-Meanwhile back at the Planet Jimmy's girlfriend (?) Isabel shows up to ask Lois if she's seen him, Lois blows her off, but Perry goes in for the follow up. He checks out Jimmy's apartment which appears deserted and discovers a piece of paper behind a photograph of Pemberton Camera Factory that reads " N / E O J S EO "

- Thara takes Chris to see Dr. Light (Hoshi) and she in turn takes him to see Jax-Ur. Chris is looking hella old and Jax-Ur is looking hella pleased.

Sorry to be so brief. I'm always surprised that I'm the first to begin this thread.

This was a pretty good issue for an 'in betweener' but I have to admit I wasn't really aware of what Jimmy's been up to, so that bit of the story confused me somewhat. Still, it was intriguing.

My only gripe with this issue is that when it was advertised it said that Lois would finally be confronting General Lane, which didn't happen. False Advertising! I was really looking forward to that!

Comments? Complaints?

I think the confrontation is next issue, with the cover showing Lois carted from the Daily Planet in handcuffs.

As far as Jimmy goes, I didn't pick up his last one shot which apparently where this issue of Action got it's story, but apparently he died or was about to die. Not sure the details once again, sorry!

Yeah, Jimmy was apparently killed in the Jimmy Olsen special (it was called "The Death of Jimmy Olsen"). No body, though, so he's likely somehow not dead.

Yeah my bet is that the newsboy legion or something like that find Jimmy and have him recover

I wonder what kind of experiments Jax-Ur is doing? I'm expecting them to be experiments on the human meta-gene. Even though Kryptonians are very powerful, I think they would be very interested in learning more about how humans can gain powers. The Dominators sure were very interested.

Jax-Ur is pretty cool. Definitely the most interesting of the Sleepers so far. It seems like he's another one more interested in doing his own thing than following Zod's agenda. So far, Tor-An was the only one actually doing his job.

Interesting that Chris was referred to as an 18 year-old boy when that's not true. But it makes sense. I doubt he or Thara actually want him de-aged younger than that.

Oh, and poor Chris. He knows well ahead of time now that he's going to go bald.

The Jimmy Olsen stuff did kind of come out of nowhere. I would've expected that plot thread to show up in Superman instead of here. It made for a couple interesting scenes though. I'm just a little confused about what's going on.

It's cool to see Dr. Light again too.

I enjoyed the Captain Atom co-feature as usual, but... double-page splashes and spreads? Okay, spreads are one thing. But no way should a double-page splash image be used in a co-feature. They're short enough as it is. And this one felt shorter than usual.

Also, while Robinson did a great job writing the reasoning behind Mon-El's costume change, Mon-El's big moment here is completely undermined by his costume sucking so much. I mean, come on. Really? Did they even try to design a costume?

Since the books are linking up in preperation for the war, it only makes sense that plot threads start carrying over more between the writers.

Ah, but when it is collected, it will work out.

They did, wanting to stick close to the basic elements but have it be closer to Superman's.

Dropped this a couple of issues back.

If it's getting good again i'll snag the trades.

Yeah, I know. But it was still surprising. Thus far, Jimmy Olsen has seemed very much like Robinson's ball to run with. I didn't expect to see Rucka picking it up here.

Probably. But reading it as a regular co-feature, it doesn't work out so well. So I still think it's a bad idea to make much use of them.

Oh no. There's no way I'll believe that Mon-El's costume here is the result of any real effort. I get what they're going for, with it being close to Superman's costume. It's hard not to get that, because it's done it probably the most lazy and uncreative way it could have been done. Mon-El's new costume could have looked so much better. Or at the very least, it could have not looked laughably bad.

Yeah, I'd say it was more ruined by the fact that the S shield couldn't actually be seen in the pic. Unless you've seen the future covers online you're left with no idea he's got 1.

...That's a really good point. I didn't even notice how you couldn't see Superman's emblem there.

Am I the only who thinks Thara and Chris' romance is seriously creepy? I mean, I don't know if Kryptonian standards are different, but Chris is basically a six year old with the body of a eighteen years old teenager.

Chris's body and mind have aged since going back into the Phantom Zone. So he is of legal age and it doesn't get DC into trouble.

One's mental age can't be be acelerated. Mental age = experience. At best, his mind and body can grow.
