I could almost understand Sgt. Fury being in the future (what with SHIELD and all), but..........Sgt. Rock?

How far into the future are they going ? I mean I could see Veitnam as a great test to do. Rock is in a war he can't win, losing men ...but he fights on. If its anything like "Sgt. Rock vs Space Alien invaders...." its gonna fucking suck.

Well, it seems like this is an effect of the success of GI Joe. War movies haven't been doing well at the box office lately, so they stripped GI Joe of any "Go America!!!" propaganda and set it in th future. It worked well for that movie, but I'm not sure if it will work for SGT. Rock.

This is a bad idea. I can understand wanting to avoid jingoism, but setting the movie in the European theater during WW2 doesn't automatically mean that it will be jingoistic. It is possible to recognize and appreciate the courage and patriotism of American fighting forces without demonizing all of those that they were fighting against as evil and alien.

But seriously, this is a bit of a weird move. Wonder how they came up with that one.

Heck, I didn't even know anyone was clamoring for a Sgt. Rock movie, but tehre you go. Hollywood surprises, and I should already be used to this by now.

Sounds like a "giant mechanical spider" situation to me.

Part of the problem is the U.S. military's low standing in the eyes of the rest of the world. A lot of people don't like it, heck even in this country. So while the future thing sounds kinda corny, a straight up WW2 movie wouldn't fare much better, especially in the international market.

The solution seems simple enough: don't do a Sergeant Rock film then. Try an Adam Strange one or something like that instead.

Ah, Sgt. Rock. He who inspired this obscure 80s British song (why Brits were using an American solider in an American comic book as imagery for a song about hitting on British girls, who knows...)

Man the members of XTC must be huge comic fans since I only know them from songs refrencing comics.

Well, supposedly the Brits' big complaints with the American GIs during the war were that they were "...overpaid, oversexed, and over here!" so that may be part of it...
