A little background: my daughter loves the Justice League cartoon. I bought the blu ray and she really digs it. Whenever the characters are introduced I yell out "Roll call!" and she can name all the characters (even Martian Manhunter - I'm so proud *sniff*).
Being a girl she loves Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl particularly so I was able to pick up a WW animated movie for dirt cheap on DVD. Being the bad parent I am I threw it in without checking the rating. It's Wonder Woman; what could possibly be objectionable in a WW movie? In the first 10 minutes or so there was a beheading, a few axes to the neck, men getting kicked in the balls, half naked Amazonians cavorting under a waterfall, comments about the villain's sexual prowess, etc. Don't get me wrong; it kicked ass. But I had to turn it off as it was completely inappropriate for a 5 year old much less a 10 year old. I don't really know what my point is. I like that an animated Wonder Woman can be targeted for adults. But I am also a little sad that my 5 year old was not able to watch her favourite superhero without the JLA dragging her down (my daughter claims that Lantern and Batman drag Wonder Woman down).

Well, I think the movie certainly is aimed at a certain segment of adult viewers, but not this particular adult. And you're right, it's sad that the movie is not appropriate for all ages.

And while I haven't seen the movie (and don't plan to), and certainly wouldn't presume to tell a parent what is appropriate or not for a child of his, it *does* seem as if standards have really changed in the past 20-25 years. When I was 10-ish, I saw movies like Apocalypse Now, The Shining, Excalibur, etc. in the theatre. Sometimes with my dad, sometimes just with friends. And it never seemed at all "odd," as my friends were watching the same stuff. I think I first saw Chinatown when I was about 10 or 11, and remember being VERY confused by the ending. Heh. :) I absolutely agree with the OP that, for a 5 year-old, a film depicting multiple beheadings is inappropriate. But when he said "let alone for a 10 year old," it just sort of sent me back in time. Of course, we also could play outside, and as long as we were back by dinner, it was all good. I guess it really was a different age. /rant Sorry.

I was watching NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (seriously) at like age 7 or 8 with my parents so I'm probably not the best person to comment on this thread.

It's violent, but all the DCU animated films in this series are. The big complaint from the higher-ups in my first draft was that there was nothing that couldn't be in a PG film.

I watched all kinds of inappropriate horror and action movies when I was little too. My concern is really more about the fact that most parents don't want young children seeing stuff that's too violent when they're young, and since the Wonder Woman DTV is pretty violent, it's going to limit the character's exposure for a lot of kids.

I was in the states recently and watched a DVD with my junior in college son and had a blast, but I guess I like that a comics movie is not automatically a G movie. It tells me the genre has expanded.
All being said, if they only make adult comic DVD's, we will lose the kids.

Anyone who solves their problems with violence shouldn't be in a G rated cartoon. A fist to the face shouldn't be the answer.
But Wonder Woman never was a G rated character. Her outfit itself kicks that rating up a few notches, throw in the bondage and violence and you might as well just make it PG-13. That's what the comic books are and parents can make the choice what they want their children to see. |

Maybe you could get her the old show on dvd?
I think we just have to accept now that superheros can be adults only, just like military or fantasy or romance or anything that can appeal to kids. Im sure the public will know with all the violent movies, that just because superheros are on cartoons doesnt mean theyre always ok for kids. |

To be honest, I'm having a hard time figuring out just who these movies are being targeted at.
Some of the language and concepts are a bit much for little kids (there were a couple of bits I kind of flinched at my kids seeing/hearing, but it was my choice to let them watch them), most 12-15 year olds aren't going to be interested, and they've butchered the stories too much to ever please the hardcore fanboys. Really, does having Steve Trevor complimenting Princess Diana on her 'great rack' add anything at all necessary to the character or story?
