Default Disney's A Christmas Carol

I'll be honest, I had terribly low expectations for this film. The commercials look hideous, I hated that Polar Express movie, I can no longer tolerate Jim Carrey even in limited doses.

BUT, A Christmas Carol is my all time favorite story, and I'm a sucker. I do feel there was no real need for this film to be animated, however, as a Dickens purist, I have to say that up until the Ghost of Christmas yet to be, it's one of the most surprisingly faithful versions I've seen. Jim Carrey plays many characters and is surprisingly understated and careful and effective. Gary Oldman does good work, and whoever played his wife almost made me cry.

There is a bit of flailing about later in the film, but it's relatively painless.

Really, much better than expected, but do we really need CGI zits?

I do believe the person you are refering to is Lesley Manville. She also Gary Oldman's Significant Other, iirc, and have a child together.

In regards to the CGI, that's pretty much all Hollywood thinks will hold the attention of kids anymore. So, would you reccomend it?

LOVE LOVE LOVE A Christmas Carol...... but I'll pass on this. From what little I've seen in commercials, etc., the main focus seems to be that it's in 3D rather than making the best movie possible.

Besides, I saw the best version of this story on stage last year at the Goodman Theater (downtown Chicago). I know this story forwards and backwards and the play surprised me in a few places.

Anyway, the new movie is Disney, so it'll make gobs of money based on that alone. It just won't get any of mine.

The last time I saw A Christmas Carol was on Broadway, with Tim Curry as Scrooge.

Yet it was a fantastic version, wasn't it?

I've seen most film versions of A Christmas Carol but I only started watching the Muppet version because of my fiancee.

I never watched it before. It was the first Muppet film to be made post Jim Henson's death and I just couldn't do it.

But about 4 years ago the girl and I had our first Christmas together and the Muppet Christmas Carol was a bit of a tradition in her house so....

Yeah, I was forced to watch it.

And I found I didn't hate it, I in fact loved it. It was a wonderful film and it's something that we pop in every holiday.

I can't stand Jim Carrey any more, given his recent promotion of lies, misinformation and anti-vaccine mass hysteria.

Yeah, I have a lot of trouble separating art from the artist.

I saw it with Ben Vereen, but he didn't play Scrooge.

Old...feh...

I can't see this movie because motion capture is evil and horrific. Seriously. The Polar Express gave me nightmares, like that scene in Being John Malkovich where Malkovich went into his own head, except with Tom Hanks. GAH!

I did not know Gary Oldman was in this though. Was he Bob Cratchet? This creates a conflict for me, because I love him almost as much as I love Jeremy Irons. Although, CGI Gary Oldman would probably just freak me out, so best I don't see it.

I'm just curious... is it REALLY that important to see it in 3D or can I just enjoy it without all the 3D hackey effects?

I'm only asking because I can be a cheap so and so, and to spend an extra 8 bucks for a ticket to just see more trumped up cheapo 3D gimmicks, just doesn't seem like it's worth it unless I"m gonna really go "WOW".

Suggestions?

I'm gonna see it anyhow.. I love the Dicken's tale. I'm just curious what version I should go see it.

Oh, I LOVE A Christmas Carol! It was the first play I ever starred in, and nothing can really compare to the script, imo. But I did like that one 90's-modern version with a selfish, sleazy CEO as Ebeneezer.
