Default 90's Batman: Alan Grant or Chuck Dixon?

Pleeeease don't say Apples and Oranges. I hate that.

So, they were both very profilific during the 90's. Grant Created many quirky villains and stories that are still fondly remembered. Including the Ventriloquist, Zsaz, Anarky, Jeremiah Arkham etc. As well as great runs in Detective Comics and Shadow of the Bat with many Oneshots. I can honestly say that I have never regreted reading or have been bored by an Alan Grant Batman story.

And Dixon started the three main Batfamily books (Until they were resently canceled though) , created Bludhaven, Birds of Prey, tons of characters in Supporting Cast and made the most s#itty regular character in my book, Tim Drake, Somewhat intersting. Not interesting enough for me to care if he dies but interesting enough for me to read a book of his every now and then.

I go with Alan Grant by the way. Like his villains and the way he wrote the classics such as The Scarecrow.

Both great and prolific batwriters, but I loved Alan Grant's work more. He was just more consistently good/ great. Criminal that his runs are mostly not collected.

But Dixon has nothing to be ashamed of. If you haven't read Dixon's Joker's Devil Advocate, then read/buy it. Hard to get, but a favorite of mine.

Dixon was better for the Bat family then Batman per-se. He took Grayson, Babs, and Drake to new levels.

Both were good, but I liked Alan Grant better.

Of course, my first Batman book was an Alan Grant book, so that might help.

Taking just Batman stories, I'd say Alan Grant's stuff is more classic, especially that first run on Detective (most of which co-written in name mostly with John Wagner). That first run is killer, no filler. Grant pretty much created a new villain every story and I think it is one of my favorite runs of Batman stories.

Chuck Dixon did a whole lot more with the supporting cast which were popular, but for me, it was kind of a success that turned the Batman titles more like the X-men with the huge cast of other characters. Some of those stories are pretty good, but in a way it kind of pushes Batman to the back a bit in his own book. I'd have to go and look, but there was some good Dixon self contained Batman stories, especially when Graham Nolan was artist.

The big crossovers were hit and miss, but I think that hit and miss is probably as dependent on the editorial staff at DC. They seemed to have it together on Knightfall, but some of the later ones like Contagion were pretty poor (even Alan Grant acknowledges this one).

Would it be sacrilegious to say I think Alan Grant is boring?

I like Dixon a lot thought.

I like both of them but Dixon a bit more. His work on the Batman Family was astounding (I also liked his Green Arrow stuff).

I liked both writers when they were on the books. They each had their own strengths and weaknesses, which worked out well for them.

Yes, but it wouldn't necessarily be false.

I generally liked Dixon's Batman stuff, but I prefer Alan Grant for both his Batman and his Judge Dredd/2000 AD work. That, and Grant lucked out by working with Breyfogle.

I'm kind of biased here, as Chuck Dixon has been my favorite comics writer since I was about fifteen(he was writing Punisher at the time), up until 5 months ago when I first discovered Marc Andreyko.

Chuck Dixon because I grew up with Knightfall. Both do great work though.
