Default 1000 People vs. 1001 People

Alright, it seems that this board has been critically short of pointlessly cruel scenarios as of late. Thus, I'm here to pick up the slack.

Before you are two locked rooms, each of which have a huge, unbreakable Plexiglas window allowing you to look inside. A timer above you gives you half an hour before both of the rooms are filled with poison gas (which kills painlessly, by the way).

You hold a key that can unlock both of the two rooms. Upon a room being unlocked, however, the other automatically seals itself shut and fills itself with poison gas.

One room contains exactly 1000 people of all ages, genders, races, and social classes. The other contains a similar mixture, save for one extra person who has nothing to make him stand out whatsoever.

They cannot see or hear you. But you can see and hear them. And as a small measure of mercy, giving another poster the key and making it their problem IS a viable option.

What do you do?

Remove the plexiglass. You said it was unbreakable, not unremovable. Besides, if it's unbreakable, I bet the Wall isn't.

Okay, fine then. The room is now bordered by god-proof walls and Plexiglas that will automatically repel anyone who tries to touch it. Happy?

Sounds like a variation of the "would you push a fatass onto train tracks to save 5 people" question.

I forgot what the ethical choice is in relation to Kant's Categorial imperative, but I think it might be to drop the key on the floor and dance on out, and leave the 2001 people to their fates.

But whatever. I just save the 1001 people and go home.

I walk away, having no remorse about killing 2001 people, and head to the strip bar....

I save the 1001 people. If I knew for a fact it was 1001, 1000 or 2001 deaths, I am obviously going to the choose the greater amount of people.

Would you feel responsible for the deaths of 1000?

Have each room pick a champion for paper rock scissors. GOOD LUCK!

I try and determine which population is more beneficial to humanity's survival and well-being. Then I save that one.

Or you could just simply see which room has the hotter women in it.

That counts as a benefit to me.

Probably but logically I have no reason too. I'd feel bad as deaths occurred but I 'shouldn't' carry any moral responsibility.

Call up Jesus and Buddha to get them to remove the gas.

You didn't protect it against Demigods.
