Default The GARY FRANK Appreciation Thread

This is not a thread to bash Gary Frank if you don't like his work. It's a thread for those of us who like him, especially his work on Superman.

So discuss, post pictures, whatever. Doesn't have to be limited to Superman, either.

I'll start.

I'll always be thankful to Gary Frank for returning Kal-El to the model that I grew up with: muscular but lean. That's the Superman I know, as drawn by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, George Perez, Curt Swan, and John Byrne, and, of course, that was the Christopher Reeve model.

I'm not sure why some people think it's bad to make Superman look like Reeve. When I think of Superman, I think of Reeve's body type and pretty much his facial features as well, and I didn't even see the movie until I was a teen. I just don't like Superman being big and bulky, something even Perez has started doing this decade.

Thank you, Gary Frank.

I might have mentioned this in another thread, but it's worth saying again here. When I saw Gary Frank's art in the pages of the Brainiac arc in Action comics, I immediately decided that I needed to start collecting Superman again.

I hadn't been collecting comics since 1995, but seeing Superman drawn so well reeled me in. And it's not just that he draws him like Christopher Reeve. It's that he looks like a real person. It's not cartoony or overstylized.

There's warmth to his characters that I don't see elsewhere. I'm so happy he's drawing Secret Origin.

Absolutely. I read an interview with Geoff Johns saying that going back to Superman without Gary Frank would be very weird, because it'd be hard to top that experience.

I too love Gary Frank! I love his lean yet muscular Superman as well...I don't understand why some people want Superman to look like a competitive body builder when he doesn't get his powers from "big muscles".

I first knew of Gary Frank when he was drawing "Midnight Nation" with JMS for Top Cow and followed him to Marvel where the two worked on "Supreme Power". I have since purchased his run on Supergirl in trade and am trying to collect his Gen-13 work as well.

To recap: Gary Frank rocks and, imo, draws the definitive Superman!

I am not a Supe fan but really admire Gary's work on the character from what I've seen. I think he's done a brilliant job. The Brainiac stuff was top notch.

I always felt Reeve looked a bit on the skinny side, but then I read about the circumstance surrounding him getting the role. He WAS really skinny but he wore a bulky sweater to the casting call. When they decided to give him the role, they wanted him to bulk up. So they had him put on 30lbs in 6 weeks, training with David Prowse (Darth Vader's body).

Reeve was rather slender normally. I think Superman should be a bit more muscular, but that's because I grew up reading the comics since the 70s and he was usually a bit more buff.

I don't know how anyone could hate his art here. I mean it fits the character like a glove. And Secret Origin has really been a great art piece for Gary Frank . If he attends a con I go to , I am so getting him to sign Secret Origin for me.

I still remember his 1st issue of 'The Hulk' and hoping he'd stay on as the regular guy.

I was also hoping the recent 'Captain Marvel' rumors regarding him were true...

Gary Frank on Captain Marvel would be so sweet.

Gary Frank is awesome. His work has so much energy and detail, its really quite incredible. His work with JMS on Midnight Nation and Geoff Johns on Action Comics are personal favorites of mine.

However, what the heck is up with the crackhead eyes? Seriously, those things are scary.

*shudder* thats so off-putting. Besides that, he probably draws my favorite Superman. Notice how the first picture its kinda like a modern version of John Bryne's Superman, and then by issue two Frank is like "Fuck it, I'm drawing Superman EXACTLY like Christopher Reeves".

The 70s onward? I don't think Superman was all that bulky then.

That's not bulky; muscular, sure, but not bulky.

That one certainly isn't.

This is bulky.

So I think Christopher Reeve was lean but muscular, which is how I think Superman should look. I don't think there's anything wrong with Superman looking like Christopher Reeve simply because I think Christopher Reeve looks like what Superman should look like.

Gary Frank is the reason I started reading Superman titles again. It's as simple as that.

(Of course, Geoff Johns doesn't hurt, but Gary's the man)
