I recently acquired the first 20 issues of Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, and I must say they are "Grade A" Batman writing. I enjoy the stand alone 'solo' Batman stories. I've read the more recent tales (Dark Moon Rising, Man Who Laughs, Long Halloween, Confidential, etc.) of this same nature and I was looking to read more.
Essentially, I need recommendations for Legends of the Dark Knight story arcs (past issue 20) and any other 80's/early 90's style Batman story-telling. Last edited by Immortal; 11-01-2009 at 03:21 PM. |

For me it would be:
Faces (28 to 30) by Matt Wagner Legend of the Dark Mite (38) by Alan Grant and Kevin O'Neill Mask (39 to 40) by Bryan Talbot Terminus (64) by Jamie Delano and Chris Bachalo Engines (74 to 75) by Ted McKeever Snow (192 to 196) by J.H. Williams III, Dan Curtis Johnson, and Seth Fisher There will be plenty more good stories; but I haven't read that many of them. |

The Collected Legends of the Dark Knight tpb contains Blades by Tim Sale and James Robinson, and Hothouse by P.Craig Russel and John Francis Moore. Blades is the best arc of any from LotDK imo, Hothouse is a definitive Poison Ivy, rare because it actiually treats her as a woman and character first and not just a cliche with a plant gimmick.
A new tpb was released last week actually, Monsters containing stories by Robinson again, Warren Ellis and Alan Grant. Can't really go wrong there either. These are all in the classic LotDK style you descibe

That reminds me... have any of you guys read issue 50, "Images"? People always forget about it whenever they mention Joker origin stories.
Is it good or bad? Or neither?

I'd second most everything listed here. "Faces" is awesomness by Matt Wagner and one of my favourite Batman stories.
There's also "Going Sane" by Dematteis and Stanton. I think it was Stanton. I also liked "Heat" which benefitted from Catwoman and Russ Heath's artwork. There was also "Blink" and "Snow" which might be worth checking out. |

Faces by Matt Wagner.(LotDK 28-30) Excellent Two-Face story, and possibly the best story in the entire LotDK run.
Mask by Bryan Talbot. (LotDK 39-40) Great psychological story that posits that Batman is just a delusion of a drunken, schizophrenic, homeless Bruce Wayne. I definitely concur with Blades, Hothouse, and Siege (because it's not only Archie Goodwin's last work, but also features art from the late Marshall Rogers, my favorite Bat artist). |

The other posters definitely have Legends story arcs covered, but as for other late 80s/early 90s Batman stories in general:
"Dark Knight, Dark City" by Peter Milligan and Kieron Dwyer (Batman 452-454). Fantastic gothic horror story in which a crazed Riddler has Batman running around in circles through one bizarre, gruesome set-up after another. Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle's run in Detective Comics in the late 80s: particularily the run beginning in Detective issue 583 and through to 594; then from 601-611. Just great Batman stories that intoduced a host of new villains. The team continued to work for a while on Batman afterward, but those stories were more in line with continuity. Also recommend the Two-Face origin story "Eye of the Beholder" which can be found on the Two-Face and the Riddler trade which was released to tie in with Batman Forever. |

"Terror" is good also. It is the sequel to "Prey" and Batman battles Hugo Strange and Scarecrow. Doug Moench and Paul Gulacy return for writing and art.

My main gripe with this story was that it presented the idea that the Joker toxins were made by the Joker's cousin, rather than the Joker doing it himself. Otherwise, I've mostly forgotten it.
