Default Peter & mentors

While I never liked Tony Stark being a "father figure" to Peter, (Their age difference at most is what... 15 years?) I do like someone interested in science taking Peter under his wing. So, after catching up on Mighty Avengers, I nominate someone I feel is a natural for Peter; Dr. Henry Pym. He's a bio-tech guy, and that's a better fit for Peter than Stark was, he has truly started to epitomize what a hero should be, and they're both bug themed heroes. It's a natural.

Slott Machine, make it so!

Didn't Pym beat his wife?

I guess that's still better than having the Devil erase your marriage to someone to save your near dead aunt.

Well, Peter did also show MJ the business side of his own hand during the Clone Saga. So!

Getting mad that the porkchops are cold aside, I could see Pym and Peter chillin' together.

The way they portrait him as a total noob in the superhero business sometimes, Justice, Toxin, Patriot or Mr.Immortal should take Peter under their wing.

I actually don't like the idea of Peter having a mentor. At the very least, a mentor for his life as a super-hero. I think he's found his own way there- plus, a lot of other heroes really haven't been in the same situation as Pete so there are places where they really couldn't offer him anything. In some cases, it's Peter who has something to teach other heroes.

Now in his civilian life, I can see Peter having a mentor. Like Captain Stacy. Or Robbie Robertson. Someone who can look out for him like a father figure and give him advice in areas where he doesn't have the necessary life experience yet. (I was goint to throw in Ezekiel, but he kind of skirts the border between his superhero life and civilian life. Plus, it was shown he wasn't really mentoring Peter as setting him up to take the fall.)

Yah, I don't think he really needs a mentor. He needs a woman in his life, though, which is at least twice as good as a mentor. Someone to henpeck him to death and constantly demand to know his whereabouts. Thats entertainment, Spidey-style!

What they should do is have Pym and Spidey start hanging out more, and at some point Harry starts wondering where Peter is all the time. Its not just the usual flakiness, Harry realizes. There's...hints. A little added skip in Peter's step. He starts ordering his coffee different at Harry's shop, the way Pym takes his coffee in his lab. Harry becomes increasingly suspicious that Peter is bro-cheating on him.

He confronts Peter, of course. "No, no. It's nothing like that, Harry. I'm just...busy, man. Gotta develop some pictures I took. Oh, no, you can't come over and help! ...I mean, heh, its delicate work. Look, we'll hang out this Friday -- Wait, that's no good for me. Sunday. We'll go see a game -- Damn, got that thing on Sunday too. Well, no worries, right? Its not like we're married to each other! We'll do something soon. Promise."

Ten minutes later. "Hank? Hey, its Peter. No, no. There's nothing wrong. I just wanted to, you know, talk a little, see how you're doing. Busy day doing SCIENCE!, huh? I wanna hear all about it, buddy."

Which was kind of the point of the Tony Stark thing - he was less Spidey's mentor than he was Peter Parker's. It spilled over, since they both have the same night job, but even then it was more Tony Stark that was the mentor, not Iron Man.

It's been a while since I read Road to Civil War, but I don't remember their dynamic being that way. Outside of costume, Peter and Tony were generally being geeks together. (Plus, Tony was force-feeding his SHRA philosophy down Peter's throat.)

Yeah, Tony becoming Peter's "mentor" kind of came out of nowhere. Like "I'm your mentor now, do what I saw" sort of thing. I guess it was done that way in order to give more credence as to why Pete would side with Tony during the Civil War and eventually unmask, but it kind of seemed like a rather forced relationship.

This makes me think of the scene from MKSM with Hank and Peter. So as a science mentor it could work.

Does Peter even need a mentor? Even by comic book time he has been on the hero business for at least ten years. Hell, if anything the guy should be someone's mentor instead.

I wasn't thinking of a mentor for being a hero, per se. I was thinking of a mentor that would bring out Peter's bio-tech geek who happens to be a hero. He'd be the perfect guy for that.

A bit of this dynamic has been going on in the Ultimate universe for quite some time (Nick Fury and Peter there) where I think it turned out pretty well. Not so much in the 616 though; Peter's too old to really have a mentor figure.

What if Peter was a mentor to someone like his daughter, like they've shown in Spider-girl.
