Default Essential Deadpool

Having seen recently the Wolverine film I was interested to see the character of Deadpool in it. He is a character that I have previously noted in the Marvelverse but never taken a lot of interest in until now.

Now I was interested in finding out which are considered to the be the essential titles of his & of these where it was best to start reading?

Most people consider writer Joe Kelly's take on the character as the ultimate definition, as do I. He wrote the first 33 issues of the first Deadpool ongoing series. Definitely worth checking out if you're interested in him.

You could hunt down individual releases or you could read the recent Deadpool Classic trades. Not all of Kelly's run has been collected in trade just yet, but I'm sure they will be, eventually. Deadpool Classic 1 contains his first appearance in New Mutants 98, his first two limited series and the first issue of the ongoing. Deadpool Classic 2 and 3 have more issues of the ongoing. Do note that the third trade isn't released until november 25.

Is he more like the character as he first kind of appeared in the film, or is he even then nothing like the character in the books?

Ryan Reynolds played Deadpool for five minutes only and that's the first scene with him in.
After that is just garbage and totally unrelated to the comics character.

As previously stated, Joe Kelly wrote the definitive Wade.

As others have mention Kelly's run, I'll point you toward another good source, Cable/Deadpool,l that luckily has all been collected. A great albeit at times off balanced run with the character, usually in the starring light for most of the series. I also throw out Gail Simone's run which gets continued in Agent X and of course 'Funeral for a Freak' is one of the more entertaining stories as well.

Deadpool Classic, vol. 2, as others have mentioned, is where to start. Kelly's run was a hilarious, yet often dark and twisted series, and the best book Marvel was putting out at the time.

Cable and Deadpool was pretty good as well, there are several trades available but Kelly's run is the best.

Thanks for that clarification.

I have to admit from the little I knew about the character that didn't quite ring true the way he was portrayed in the film for most of the time. But I wanted check up on it.
