Lightbulb Does Hemingway's writing make you blush?!

Well it makes me blush! Smile and everything inbetween!

Hills like white elephants.

It took many reads but all the little subtext came through just fine.

A writer with such a simple style and yet so effective.

Thoughts?

Agreed.

He's got his critics, but his fame is well-deserved.

Who?

I don't know many famous journalists.

Hunter S. Thompson.

Thompson would type up Hemingway's books (among others). He said it gave him unique insight into writing. He also wrote an article about Hemingway's suicide titled "What Lured Hemingway To Ketchum?"

And it could be a coincidence, but both authors committed suicide.

Hemingway's a pretty flawless stylist as far as minimalism goes. I've generally found that critics of his style are actually critics of the knock-offs of his work. As the OP states, his simplistic style is all about the subtext. The bad Hemingway imitators didn't use subtext, they just tried to be terse and brief, which tends to lead to relatively mediocre writing. He's got his faults, but I'd argue that his ability to submerge meaning was pretty damned important.

I just found out about this the other day. I googled it and found this source among many others: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.11/sixwords.html

Quote:
Hemingway once wrote a story in just six words ("For sale: baby shoes, never worn.") and is said to have called it his best work.
That is absolutely brilliant, and it illustrates what Froggie said. The subtext of Hemingway's work is key. With those six words, we are thrust into a clear tragedy.

no, his antiquated words do not make me blush. reading most romantic, 'hidden' phrases makes me think is, why?
