Default U.N. Investigates New York City's Human Rights Violations

And what does the U.N. contend might constitute widespread human rights violations in the Big Apple?

Housing prices.

Quote:
The United Nations has assigned an official, “a special rapporteur on the right to adequate housing,” to check the city’s affordable housing...She told them: “I am representing the right of adequate housing as a human right.”
As one of the commenters notes, "I must have missed the provision whereby everyone has a fundamental right to live in New York City."

So what exactly happens if-and-when they make their report, and NYC is decreed a violator of basic human rights? Can New York City residents claim political asylum in other countries?

Sounds almost like something that recently happened in the New Orleans area. One of our parishes (counties) tried to zone an area of land against the building of apartment complexes, and a federal judge has ruled that a violation of rights. The parish claims that more inexpensive housing will hurt the local economy.

It's already a parish that is mostly swamp, so there isn't that much land to go around (this is the exact spot Katrina hit). I think it's strange that bleeding heart activists are fighting for the right of the poor to be used as pirogues (erm... "canoes" for the un-Cajun) for the next Katrina.

After I read the question, I was about to answer "Housing prices" as a joke.

OTOH, the link mentioned that NYC used eminent domain for a private development (still under legal challenge) which is something that I've always been leery of.

The U.N. investigating anybody for human rights violations is a little like a brothel owner investigating a strip club for lewd behavior.

you missed the part where it was based on race as in keeping st bernard parish as white as it always was.

what most found strange was that those so-called bleeding hearts were ignoring the housing discrimination and illegal actions/laws like the blood relative ordinance and such

Wait, doesn't the United Nations basically sit in NYC for free? Who are they to talk about housing prices??

The UN is riddled with corruption. Methinks this "investigation" is just a sham instituted by a few angry UN higher ups who want to bully the city into providing them more luxurious housing.

Yes, because the UN is well-known for its practices of torture and human slavery.

UN delegates are responsible for their own housing. It's just the UN headquarters proper that's provided by the city.

The members of the human rights council aren't known for their human rights record.

One can argue whether or not housing is a basic human right, but it's uncontestable that the cost of housing in New York City is ridiculously overpriced.

Housing, yes. Housing in a particular city, not clear.

NYC overpriced? Certainly. Should the UN be doing something about that? Questionable.

See what happens when this U.N. Inspector visited Manhattan. No one will rent out to 4 turtles and a rat.

And of course the UN should do something about housing prices and yet ignore the skyrocketing crime rates of cities like Caracas and Johannesburg and the death squads of Rio de Janeiro.

Talk about misplaced priorities.

Yeah, but why drag "facts" and "evidence" and "the historical record" into this?
