I dropped my iPod Touch this morning and it hit the metal base of my exercise bike and the screen has a long crack across it and a few little cracks. It still works but I'll have to return it to the store as I have an accidental damage warranty so I'll either get a repair or a replacement. The little terms and conditions things says it doesn't cover minor cosmetic damage but this is a long scratch like crack and a smashed window like row of cracks at the bottom so I'll be able to get it fixed as it seriously affects the picture.
I won't be able to get to the store until Monday but it isn't a problem as I can still use it but the cracks at the bottom left are annoying. The fact the touch screen still works must mean it is only surface damage and they'll either attach a new screen or give me a similar replacement. I'm glad I had the cover as it cost £282 a few months ago.

![]() Sorry to hear about it, man. Considering my iPod is the only portable piece of electronic equipment I cherish, I'd feel sad if my cracked too.

I'm lucky I bought it from a major national chain (Currys) who sell a load of iPods so if they can't fix it, I should be able to get another one thanks to the accidental damage cover.
It would have been insured anyway but having store cover means not having to claim on household insurance. It would have been a nightmare if it wasn't insured though. I've heard it can cost upwards of £50 just for the surface and digitiser to be replaced and the same again for the actual screen and that isn't including labour costs. I was going to buy a cover for it but the saleswoman said she didn't think they were very good and advised me not to buy one. It would probably have saved the screen from being cracked as the impact was right on the corner of the screen panel and another 3 millimetres to the left would have saved any damage to the screen. It fell unto my exercise bike which has metal poles as supports with big domed bolts and I think the iPod feel unto the connecting bolt which is solid and raised from the surface of the pole. I'm going to the store in the morning (wasn't worth going on Sunday as the bus service is awful and the store is often understaffed. I actually had a problem with the first one I bought as the sound died on it just after I first used it. I've heard a lot of people break the screens on their iPods and I was thinking that it might be a good idea for Apple to put some sort of folding panel on them that flips from the back to the front to cover the screen when it isn't in use. Even calculators have the little plastic panel that you slide off and cover the screen with. Something like that would prevent a lot of screen damage.

That's just weird.
I had 1G iPhone that I dropped about 5 feet onto a tile floor, and there was barely a mark. Then a 3GS iPhone that dropped about 4 feet onto a wood floor, and there's not a mark on it. I remember when the iPhone first came out, there were tests on iFixit and other sites, where they would throw it onto a concrete driveway, and stuff. And it was fine. So, unless they are making the Touch in a completely different fashion, I don't really understand that.

I took the iPod into the store this morning as their slightly vague terms and conditions list said to do that and I would get a repair or immediate replacement but it turns out that because the iPod was a more expensive model at £282 it meant that the £150 limit for that was exceeded although the form had a typo saying it covered products over that limit rather than under, it has to be sent by courier to a repair centre, although the guy at the store thinks I'll probably be given credit for a replacement. My warranty cover can be carried through to a replacement purchase too as the remaining time on it is reimbursed as a statement that can be used to get replacement cover on a replacement purchase.
If I hadn't bought new games and movies for the iPod, I might have considered using store credit towards a laptop PC but I want to get another iPod as I have hundreds of songs, loads of games and some great movies in my iTunes library and they'd be wasted without an iPod Touch or iPhone. Maybe the best part is that new models are available which don't cost much more that the one I bought and I could get the 64GB version for £17 if I get what I paid for the 32GB version as replacement credit. I hope they don't offer the cost of the current 32GB model as I'd lose about £30 on my purchase and the 64GB model would be more expensive.
