Default Suicide : The Sad Path some Choose ?

This is likely the most serious thread I will ever do. There won't be any jokes and any funny one liners . Nope... this is gonna be one we all can chime in on and be serious. Yes , I can be serious at times. So here I go....

A few days back Hulk Hogan admitted he had thoughts of sucide. The man who once was the mighty Hulkster (you non-wrestling fans picture Golden Age Superman now) who vanquished evil in the ring during the 1980's , was pretty much at rock bottom as his marriage collapsed after 23 years and his son went to jail.

Hogan went to say that the only thing that saved him was Laila Ali (Muhammed Ali's daughter) who called when she noticed Hogan looked distracted at work . From what Hogan claims he downed a cocktail of Xanax and rum , and had his finger on the trigger when she called to talk to him.

But if a man like Hulk Hogan can go that close to the edge it shows what many sadly battle thru each day . With those who feel the weight of the world crashing down or battling depression or pain ...we all have heard famous stars like Kurt Cobain take their lives because of the pain they feel .

Like back in the 1970's.....Mel Street. Anyone remember him ? My dad does...since him and his brother ran an auto body shop near here . Street was a gifted muscian and had talent , and would play for everyone.

Mel Street : "Met A Friend of Yours Today"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWI5g7UQy30

Mel Street : "Smokey Mountain Memories"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9r8aT8fhydM

Street was at the apex of his career and had signed a new record contract with Mercury Records. But the constant touring tore his family life apart and as he battled depression and alcoholism , Street took his own life in 1978.

Mel would have been 74 years old today had he lived.

Mel Street is just one of those stories we know. We all have heard it. Weeks ago a young lady jumped off a bridge in NYC as she had battled depression for years . The same bridge its claimed her dad murdered her mother at years ago .

Whats your 2 cents people ? How do you weigh in on those who take that path ?

Suicide is tricky.

It's really easy to condemn those who commit it as weak and pathetic. It's hard to put yourself in that person's shoes without being in the same position, I imagine.

I also think the person-on-the-street has a hard time differientating between someone who is just looking for attention and someone who really wants to end it all.

I personally believe if you want to kill yourself then you would do everything you could to make sure no one knows. If you create a spectacle then you're just looking for attention.

That being said, again, I imagine the emotions involved are so complex and screwy that I really don't want to say that I can attest for sure.

You can't fit it all neat and nice in a box and shove it under the bed.

It's startling to see how suicide compares to homicide:

I don't see why people are so surprised that Hulk Hogan almost committed suicide the marriage and family was breaking apart completely
and i've seen what that can do to people including my father who actually seemed lonely and depressed after the divorce and he is not a man who shows emotion.

His son was also in prison for putting his best friend in a vegetative state and Brooke's music career (the reason they made the show) has still not gone anywhere.

Also his wrestling career is/was pretty much over and i'm sure that's something he misses quite a lot.

At the risk of sounding antiseptically-clinical, that's really interesting stuff you've posted there, Fenris.

In class last week suicide came up. My teacher who works at Hurley Medical Center(Flint, Michigan) said that they get 25 suicides a week.

He also says statistically woman attempt suicide more often, but men are more successful at it

For me it's an interesting time for this subject to come up. A woman who lived in the house behind mine committed suicide yesterday morning. She hung herself from the second floor porch and I actually saw her hanging there.

Just a moment, not a sight you want to linger on, but at the same time one you can't get out or your head.

I don't understand why anyone would want to commit suicide, but I would never condemn someone for doing so. It's just sad that some people feel they have no other choice and never get the help they need to find the will to go on living.

Of course, it's often worse for the survivors, the ones who have to live with knowing what someone they cared for did. That's the hardest part to imagine, being so trapped in your own despair you no longer care about hurting those who care for you.

I'd say it's a case of being overwhelmed by your problems to the point where death seems like the easy way out. Or at least, the only way out.

o1pickleboy gives the age old dichotomy:

He also says statistically woman attempt suicide more often, but men are more successful at it
This leads to the conclusion that many women are attempting it for drama attention and men really mean it. How accurate that conclusion is, I do not know.

I've had it cross my mind. I'm too chicken-shit, for one, and I've always been wary of making irrevocable decisions. Give me a fatal illness and that'd be all she wrote, though (at least, when it got too bad to live with).

Teach said it had more do to with the method chosen. Men prefer guns, Women prefer slitting their wrists and pills.

they can pump your stomach and repair the artery in the wrist, but can't fix a gunshot wound to the head

I have attempted suicide in the past. It's hard to explain what goes through your head without sounding like a whiner or pathetic or any other adjective that gets thrown onto "suiciders". The bottom line is, sometimes nothing seems solvable. People may not seem to care, and problems build up. There's a point that is reached where it just doesn't seem worth it anymore and where someone feels more pain than enjoyment out of life. And it's easy to say it will get better, or that people care, or any other words of encouragement, but by the time you reach that line it falls on deaf ears.

Sometimes those who are at that point are blind and deaf to the world around them. They may not see the great things in life, and fortunately I eventually came around and noticed what I was missing. My nieces.

Of course, there's the possibility that "method chosen" is also part of "meaning it".

Even my suicidal thoughts are inherently lazy. Sometimes it just doesn't seem worth the hassle to bother staying alive.

I attempted it once. I was still a teenager, but life was hell and I just wanted out. I was full of anger and pain and fear, especially fear. I was terrified of the future. And I was angry and wanted to take it on everyone I knew, by hurting them in the only way I knew how.

Afterwards, everything changed. It's no exaggeration say my suicide attempt was the most life-changing experience of my life. I learned the value of my life and swore never to try to throw it away again.

I also swore that the next time I was angry enough to try to kill someone, it wouldn't by myself who was the target.

I agree with equal rights for gays - including gay marriage. Racism is wrong, as is sexism. All men and women are equal, and should be treated that way. Drugs should be legalized, and taxed heavily. Guns should be illegal for civilians, in all countries. I am opposed to the death penalty, usually. There is no such thing as God, or the Afterlife. All religions are equal - equally stupid.

But don't ever call me liberal.

I love those patients, they are a fun bunch. Recently had a call to pick up some lady at a clinic. She used the doctors stethoscope to hang herself. She even tried to use a wall socket at the psych hospital we took her to. She was really intent. The ones I hate are the rich babies that talk about it and try using Benadryl.
