Killing characters for the heck of it is still somehow seen as visceral and "edgy", that's why these guys do it. (which of course it stopped being as soon as it became such an easy and convenient cliche to portray "edgyness").
These days they even rely on the excuse that someone's bound to revivie the character a few years later.
