Default Twitter and Facebook take on Daily Mail journalist

Twitter and Facebook have gone a bit crazy today following this piece by Jan Moir that appeared in todays Daily Mail.

Essentially Jan is casting doubts over the validity of Stephan Gately's death by suggesting that his lifestyle (ie being gay) had more to do with his death than is being told.

Naturally the social networking sites have been alive with people urging others to report her to the press complaints commission. So much so that the PCC website went down this afternoon.

Fucking disgraceful piece of journalism, from a fucking disgraceful paper.

Oddly enough I've just seen Charlie Brooker's piece regarding this and it's a cry of angry genius.

For the Daily Mail to allow these paragraphs to be published:

Quote:
Nevertheless, his mother is still insisting that her son died from a previously undetected heart condition that has plagued the family.

Another real sadness about Gately's death is that it strikes another blow to the happy-ever-after myth of civil partnerships.

Gay activists are always calling for tolerance and understanding about same-sex relationships, arguing that they are just the same as heterosexual marriages. Not everyone, they say, is like George Michael.
is just bloody terrible.

If I were Gately's family, or his incredibly rich friends, I'd take the Mail, and Jan Moir to the cleaners.

You know the best part of this? The irony of the ones who campaigned against Jonathan Ross being campaigned against for far more

What? How the hell does human mortality prove that?

The rest of Moir's column consists of extreme mysoginy and reaches a peak with this insanity.

Quote:
Why has it taken so long for Labour's equal rights laws to blow up in their face?

It is clear to anyone with three brain cells that excessive amounts of maternity leave and gigantic sex discrimination payouts - of the kind shepherded through by Sir Harriet Harman - have not strengthened the position of women in the workplace.

If anything, they have hampered the prospects of many, particularly in a credit-crunched marketplace.

If you are a young, ambitious woman of child-bearing years, any employer is going to think once, twice, three times about you, lady.

Particularly small businesses, who are hammered out of all existence by discriminatory legislation and given no help to thrive.

This government, desperate to appease working mothers at any cost, has alienated employers, not encouraged them.

It goes on and on, but what is clear is that that great citadel of gender gelding, the Government Equalities Office, is doing more harm than good.
Yes, it's 2009 and a woman in the Daily Mail is saying gays dying is 'sleazy' and women should either be childless crones pushing for a career or stuck in the kitchen cooking, As for equal rights, pffffttttt!

I decided to see how long the maternity leave was:

Quote:
As an 'employee' you have the right to 26 weeks of 'Ordinary Maternity Leave' and 26 weeks of 'Additional Maternity Leave' making one year in total. Provided you meet certain notification requirements, you can take this no matter:

how long you have been with your employer
how many hours you work
how much you are paid

You continue to be an employee throughout your Ordinary and Additional maternity leave.
So you can take a whole year, which does sound excessive. On the other hand, how many people are going to take a whole year? You don't even have to take 26 weeks. And I'd have thought the Mail would want mothers to spend more time with their newborns?

It was an appalling piece. She is now defending it as being an argument against drug-taking, not homosexuality.

What an utter cow. This week the people near St. Laurence's have been working hard to clean up the area for Gately's funeral. It's a working class, deprived area of town and his school teachers and those that known him have spoken of their pride that he 'got out', and made a life for himself.

Stephen Gately's story is one of success despite a life of hardship. Sounds cheesy, but it's true. For this woman to strip that all away, as well as attack Matt Lucas in his time of grief, in order to air her own bigoted views - that's hateful and wrong.

Someone correct me here, but I heard that Paul Dacre runs both the Daily Mail and the PCC? In which case, is there any hope in the complaint been processed?

I admit I let it pass me by until I saw, of all things, a tribute by Big Finish. Specifically "that is one of the most dreadful aspects of Stephen's death: the loss of everything that might have been".

He's Chairman of their Code of Practice Committee. The Commission Members are a different body.

Over 1000 complaints and the website crashing under the strain? Hard to not process that one and get away with it.

Also, from that link:

Quote:
The article in question initially had the headline "Why there was nothing 'natural' about Stephen Gately's death" but this was later changed on the paper's online edition to: "A strange, lonely and troubling death..."
HA.

Bollocks was it. She was retreading the whole 'poofs are scum' line the Mail is good at.

This is where she's fucked up. She's assumed that because these people are gay that a majority of people would go 'hmmmm, poofs, eh???!??', but they've not as they've been accepted by the public as who they are, not because of their sexuality.

No matter how shite you though Gateley's music was (and it was shite) he was harmless and set an example for the opening up of modern pop music regarding homosexuality, and when he came out everyone thought 'so?'. Except the homophobes of course.

Marks and Spencer have pulled their advertising from online versions of the Mail because of Moir's article, plus there's all matter of carnage being thrown at the Mail as this seems to be the proverbial straw that broke the camels back.

Now that advertisers are removing their ads and therefore, money from the Mail then Moir and Dacre should be rightfully shitting bricks over the backlash.

Darling, something you have to understand about the tabloids in the UK: Their not REAL news.

You know those threads complaining about Fox News, about how their biased, etc? The tabloids in the UK make Fox News look like the most fair and impartial media service EVER.
