When Galactus creates one of his heralds, he often physically transforms them into structurally different beings. Hence, the human Norrin Radd took on the silvery metallic sheen of the Silver Surfer, and the flesh-and-blood Tyros became the stone-like Terrax.
But with their control over the power cosmic, could Galactus' heralds revert their external physical forms to their natural states? They'd still have their command of the power cosmic, but physically, they'd be their old selves. Can they do that? Buried Alien (The Fastest Post Alive!)

I've never seen that happen in any comic that I have read but I assume that Norrin with his transmutaion ability could pull it off. I always kind of wanted the Silver Surfer to appear to people in his natural human form every now and then.

I don't recall which exact issue it was, but the Silver Surfer did it once when he had lost his emotions, in order to blend in with the humans.

I don't think they ever had, but the ability, or discovering the ability could have made for some good stories.
Perhaps a story where Nova returned to earth with Surfer, and he showed her how to use the power cosmic to appear as her own human self. Too bad she's dead. |

Even if they couldn't revert to their organic shapes, they could probably project illusions that allow them to appear physically human.

For the most part the heralds can pretty much do whatever the hell they want. The only limitations are whatever ones Galactus choses to put on them.

As to the Heralds, the initial batch seem modeled after primal elements (and you can still sorta say that about that dark matter jackass that Thanos lobotomized). Water. Air. Fire. Earth. The later Heralds were either combonations of these ideas or rush-jobs when Galactus needed something done in a hurry. the original four seem far more powerful than the later heralds- at least in the diversity of the power cosmic's capabilities. Firelord, Terrax and the Surfer have both re-arranged molecules, changed genetic structures in living creatures, etc.and shown themselves (and their chosen tools) to be made of some solid form of power-cosmic. I dont see why they cant be seen as whatever they want, as they have molecular control (even if it's subliminal) over their bodies. |

In theory, I don't see why (as Jason says) the heralds cannot control their "borders" and alter how they appear. After all, if the Surfer can give Quasimodo a whole new body, he should be able to create something for himself to "wear". At the least, they should be able to cast illusions around themselves, which is what I assume the Surfer did when he was with Alicia Masters. So, there should be a number of ways in which this can be done. However, I also recall the Surfer wandering among humans wearing a trenchcoat and dark glasses as camouflage, so he clearly was not using this ability on a regular basis.
That being said, I, personally, have only one comic in which a herald resumed "normal" form - and that was a bit of soft porn moment. This was in the original "Hercules" mini-series, way back in the 80s or early 90s. Hercules encounters Frankie Raye/Nova and ends up having sex with her (basically off-panel). The next time we see Frankie, she is semi-nude and looks completely human. This particular incident may not be a good guide, however - for one thing, when Nova appears in this story, she actually looks the same as she did before she became a herald (i.e,, without the gold covering) so there is already that "error/problem". Second, in "The Last Galactus Story", I distinctly remember a scene where Nova returns to Earth and laments how much it has changed and her own inability to shed her covering so that she can experience the Earth as it is. This last point may indicate that heralds cannot alter their fundamental physical forms, though that says nothing about their ability to cast illusions. |

It's not that he can't give himself pants to wear or even that he doesn't need them Norrin Rad just doesn't want to wear pants. Puts the Silver Surfer in a whole new light don't it? |
