Default The Mayors Of Gotham

Huh... Sorry for the double post, but my last thread didn't... uhm, thread? Anyway, I'm trying to make a list of Gotham Mayors, and who was Mayor when. Here's what I've got so far:

Theodore Cobblepot - Penguins Great-Grandfather, and had the longest term in Gotham City history. (Gotham Underground)

Aubrey James - Was Mayor while Bruces parents were still alive. (LODK: Madmen Of Gotham)

Wilson Klass - Was Mayor during the Year One era. Forced Gordon to lead a Batman hunting squad. His daughter was also kidnapped by Hugo Strange. (LODK: Prey)

Mayor Gill - Looks like he won an election around the same time Batman first showed up in Gotham. Was forced into giving money to Frank Sharp (LODK: Irresistable)

Hamilton Hill - Was Mayor during the time when Rupert Thorne was around. He fired Gordon for helping Batman. After Batman brought in Thorne he re-hired Gordon. He disappeared after CoIE.

Mayor Skowcroft - Mayor of Gotham when Swamp Thing came to town looking for his girlfriend Alec. (Swamp Thing)

Armand Krol - He was Mayor during the Knightfall era. He thought Batman was the best protection for Gotham and ended up firing Gordon. He lost an election and died during the Clench virus. (Knightfall, Knightsend, Contagion and Legacy)

Marion Grange - She re-hired Gordon as Commissioner. She was Mayor up until Gotham was declared a No Man's Land. She was assassinated soon after. (Contagion, Legacy, Cataclysm, No Man's Land)

Daniel Danforth Dickerson III - Became Mayor during "No Man's Land" and was later assassinated by the Joker with a sniper rifle. (No Man's Land, Gotham Central: Soft Targets)

David Hull - Became Mayor after Dickerson's assassination. (Gotham Central: Soft Targets)

Mystery Mayor - During One Year Later Gordon referred the current Gotham Mayor as "she". (Face the Face)

Mystery Mayor II - The as yet unamed Mayor in Batman RIP. (Batman RIP)

NON-CONTINUITY MAYORS:

Julius Lieberman - Mayor when a Predator came down to Earth. (Batman vs. Predator)

Mayor Giordano - Mayor in the distant future. (The Dark Knight Returns)

I'm really interested about Mayors during Batman's early years, but can't find much info.

love this topic. can I put in a few [citation needed] tags?

i'd love to read a few of these issues, particularly Krol's Batman approval and 3D3's asassination

I always liked Mayor Linseed (sp?) from the 60s show Course he don't count, though

Great topic!

Wilson Klass was mayor during the Year One era. His daughter was kidnapped by Hugo Strange in "Prey."

There is a wikipedia article on Gotham's mayors.

Here is a list of Gotham City's mayors going back to Hamilton Hill. This is pretty much Sn4tcH's list, but I added a couple from the wikipedia entry, and included the years they appeared in the comics. As far as I know, there's a gap from 1987-1990 during which there was no named mayor of Gotham appearing in the comics. Also, during No Man's Land (1999), Gotham City did not have a mayor.

Hamilton Hill (1982-1985)
Skowcroft (1986)
Julius Lieberman (1991-1992)
Armand Krol (1992-1996)
Marion Grange (1996-1998)
Daniel Dickerson III (2000-2003)
David Hull (2004-2005)
Unknown mayor(s) (2006-?)

This list does not include mayors appearing in flashbacks or in stories set in Batman's early years.

The most recent mayor -- as established in Morrison's run -- is an unnamed male.

I almost forgot about the mayor seen in RIP. Definitely male.

However, I recall seeing a reference, post-BFTC, to a female mayor, but I don't recall which issue. Did I just imagine this? Anyone know?

Is it possible we have already had at least two unnamed mayors since OYL?

During the "Gotham After Midnight" arc, Midnight kills the current mayor of Gotham. I don't remember if he was named, but I am pretty sure he was not.

Gotham After Midnight isn't in continuity, I don't believe. I could be totally wrong about that though.

I think Gotham After Midnight falls into a grey area regarding its status in continuity. It doesn't flat out contradict anything, does it? If it is in continuity, a lot of other stories have to take place during it, since it takes place over the course of an entire year.

It hasn't been referred to in any other story, so I prefer to read it as a standalone story outside of continuity.

Updated the first post a little. I can't remember what storyline Hamilton Hill took place during. Was it Strange Apparitions?

Is Hamilton Hill the only "modern" Gotham mayor who actually retired rather than being murdered?

I love Hill - he was the mayor in The Animated Series, after all. Wasn't his son the kid from "Be A Clown"? That episode had a little bit of a terrifying element to it. Plus, it was the first ever appearance of Harley Quinn.

Hull was an interim mayor, so I take it he only presided for a little while, with reelections hitting in 52 at some point (probably the same time Gordon came out of retirement - around Christmas). (By the way, anyone who hasn't read Gotham Central: Soft Targets should - every chance I get I'll plug Gotham Central).

Man ... Gotham's been through 10 or more mayors in the 15ish years Batman's been running around? A big city mayoral term is usually four years. Hill seems like the only guy who lasted a full term, and that was during the Dick Grayson as Robin years ... (which in comic time was 7 years, give or take, but in real life was obviously ... 40 or so?).

Crazy.

Yes, it was his son.

But Harley didn't appear in 'Be a Clown'. She debuted in another episode, 'Joker's Favor'.

Love the list man, thanks for the info!!

But as far as Mayors go, with Gotham being crime-central, and folks like Batman running around all the time, the Mayor of Gotham is a fairly ineffectual person/position.
