Compared to the others in fanfiction for Eva how woud Mari Makinami do?

Of the characters present in Rebuild of Evangelion who do you think would be best suited for Mari Makinami as a couple in a romantic paring? How would she do with Shinji?

Point taken, she only looks nice, that's all she has going for it, people tend to focus on her looks and ignore everything else.

Asuka, to some degree, is what Shinji needs- someone who actually challenges him to man up and grow a spine. Rei is too passive for that, and Misato, while being better at it, not only actually loves someone else (Asuka's crush on Kaji is mostly her fooling herself- it's clear she doesn't connect with Kaji in any actual level, and her crush is mostly born out of her desire to seem mature rather than Kaji's actual qualities), but is too out of synch with Shinji's stage at life. Too old to be a good partner figure, too young to be a good mother figure.

If Shinji were to live a normal life, with no fighting or EVAs, Hikari could be a good choice- stern and challenging while still kind and understanding. A mecha pilot needs someone who can tough him up more, though.

Ritsuko would be a horrible pairing for Shinji from all angles. Not only there is the age gap to consider, and not only does she love *his father*, but she's too callous to others' actual feelings, far too distant for Shinji's needs, and she herself admits she doesn't know what to do of children.

Now, as for Mari, she seems to be, character-wise, a middle point between Asuka's toughness and Hikari's understanding, mixed with some actual wiseness and insight hard to find in the EVA world. (Mind, I'm going with what I deciphrated of the raws- I need a fucking sub!). So, actually, she would be my current ideal pick for Shinji, but I'm sure the final two movies will ruin her somehow.

I dunno, while i haven't gotten to see any of Rebuild yet, everythign I hear about it is that it's less a deconstruction of Super Robots (Which owuld be silly at this point) and more just redoing Eva in general. And without the deconstruction angle their largely free to actually have a happy ending.

I wouldn't bet on it, cause... ya know... Gainax. But we can probably hope for a bittersweet ending and a happy ending for at least some of the cast (I mean, hey, Dyakka got off light with only the death of his brother-in-law).
