Default Hurricane Story

Her eyes started to weep while curled up in the laundry room of the house. Outside, strong winds made noises like the blowing of a whistle. She just couldn't comprehend that her son was still out there. She was curled up, sitting down on the floor of the foyer with her arms wrapped around her legs.

Outside, 16 year old Timothy was getting a taste of bravery. He had decided that he could take the time very quickly to remove potential flying hazards from the backyard. After all, the storm had just arrived, they would be better prepared for the worst of the storm if they prepared now. Timmy grabbed some brick blocks that were laying around the backyard, used as weights on the parts of the fence that bent too much and etc. He planned to stack them on top of each other so that their combined weights would be too much for the storm to carry them. He then ran across the yard to the other side, he needed to bring any pots of plants inside. He rushed to do so just as the rain started from the storm. Finally, he had one more thing to do. He needed to board up the windows so that the inside of the house would be protected from flying glass shrapnel. Quickly, he ran to grab wooden boards from the garage. The sizes he needed had already been laid out so he quickly grabbed one and grabbed the duck tape. He rushed, window by window at a frantic pace, it ran through his head that maybe he shouldn't have done this at the last second, maybe he shouldn't have delayed it a bit. Finally, he rushed to grab the final board and started taping it to the final window. He breathed a sigh of relief, although the strong winds and green sky were of a threat to him he had survived it without fear of death. He proudly walked back to the laundry room foyer.

Susie was stressed; hearing the winds while all alone and knowing her son was still out there, became too much for her to handle. She soon would wear a shocked face that promised her son a warm welcome.

All of a sudden, the door opened and in walked Timothy, soaked in dirty rain, he had a big smile on his face. Susie jumped up and hugged him, naturally, she was excited to see her son back and doing well. She couldn't help but think of the last time she saw him, an event that almost became her last interaction with him.

Susie remembered yelling for Timmy to come inside the foyer as he stood there and told her no. "I've got to make sure everything's secure first." he said. "Timmy, nothing is worth more than you" she said. Indeed, it was a dumb decision on 16-year old Timmy's part, he could've gotten caught in the storm, however luckily the hands of fate were on Timmy's side today. Now he stood with his arms around his mother. The only thing left to do is wait out the storm.

Twelve hours later Timmy opened the door to the foyer. Everything in the house was fine, there were no broken windows with or without the boards. Timmy smiled and turned to his mom "Good thing I got rid of any possible debris." he said. Susie went outside, the family owned a table with an umbrella on it and a set of chairs. The umbrella had now been turned inside out. Susie explored the backyard, looking for anything out of place. She was shocked to see that the next door neighbors yard had lost a tree and that it had fell just inches of her own fence. She ran inside to get Timmy. "Timmy, look! Look what happened in Mr. Dalson's backyard!" She yelled.

Timmy came running outside, he surely hoped that his work wasn't done in vain and none of their backyard debris had flown into Mr. Dalson's backyard. When he arrived he saw eyes as wide as baseballs adorning Susie's face. "A tree fell just inches of our house." She explained franticly. "It was the large redwood tree in their yard, it fell from one side of the yard to the other and missed our fence by just inches!" she exclaimed. "Good, we just barely missed a tragedy." Timothy said. Susie knew the neighbors weren't home so she tried something risky. She jumped up on the fence to take in the whole sight. Now she was really getting excited. "We just barely missed that one!" she said. "You bet." replied Timmy. "Looks like the hands of fate are on our side." he said. "Let's just pray they still will be next year." said Susie.
