So Thanos has been dead a few years now and I've been going back through what I've read of the character, which is pretty much all after 1990. Just wondering what are people's suggestions for Thanos stories pre Infinity Gauntlet? I know they're kind of a pain to find. This is one of those things I wish Marvel would get on, for character's who've had essential moments occur in 13 different titles spaced out over 2 decades.

The Thanos stories that you absolutely have to get are in the original Warlock series, where Warlock and Thanos team up to take on the Magus. When Thanos reappears, after that storyline, it's to murder Warlock and try to destroy the universe. I believe that those stories were in Avengers Annual #7 (which I only have as a reprint) and Marvel Two-In-One Annual #2 (where Spiderman and the Thing enter the fray and Spidey ends up playing a pivotal role in Thanos' defeat and destruction). These are the events that precede his reintroduction in The Silver Surfer.
These Warlock stories were reprinted in a series from the 1980s called "Fantasy Masterpieces", which also reprinted all of the first Silver Surfer series. Thanos also briefly reappears in Starlin's "The Death of Captain Marvel". Personally, I think that these are the best Thanos stories. When he is reintroduced in the Surfer he is too powerful and then the whole Infinity Gems/Gauntlet thing just ends up (in my view) becoming too much. Thanos as God, defeating every major power in the universe and still messing up, just didn't work for me. It made the Marvel Universe a much smaller place when it really was possible for one power-mad Titan to become the ultimate power and still not learn anything. I don't have many of the very earliest appearances of Thanos, when he's first introduced as a major villain for Capt Marvel and the Avengers. I have one Marvel Two-In-One from the period where the Thing and Iron Man take on the Blood Brothers, two of Thanos' agents, but that's it. But I would love to read those earlier stories myself, so if anyone knows of them being compiled in a TPB or a later series (akin to "Fantasy Masterpieces") please let me know. |

Pre-Infinity Gauntlet? You want two books, one trade and one hardcover.
THE LIFE & DEATH OF CAPTAIN MARVEL (Captain Marvel #25-34, Iron Man #55, Marvel Feature #12, The Death of Captain Marvel) MARVEL MASTERWORKS: WARLOCK v2 (Strange Tales #178-181, Warlock #9-15, Marvel Team-Up #55, Avengers Annual #7 and Marvel Two-In-One Annual #2) That's not everything, but it's damn close. |

The Warlock stories were also reprinted in 2 other miniseries in the 80s and again in the 90s after IG. The one from the 90s is a better reprint but the one from the 80s is a bit cheaper to buy. The Fantasy Masterpieces are incomplete.

The warlock stuffs with thanos against magnus , you can probably get the individual issues on ebay if you don't want the hc , the avengers annual 7 & marvel two in one annual 2 though is an essential thanos story since it features his first death.

Expletive Deleted covered the essential stuff (which I think includes all but two Thanos appearances up to his first death).
If you've read all that and still want more, Thanos Quest #1-2 (they were collected once) is pretty awesome and leads into the Infinity Gauntlet.
