How an x-men creative team can use Shortpack

after a brainstorming session i think i've found a way to make Shortpack more attractive to the x-writers. he's kind of lost his place in the x-verse what with Xavier having his brain rebooted, Mystique going back to being a hardcore baddie, Forge going nuts/being replaced by the science team, and M-Day. from that perspective, i can fully understand why no one would put any effort into working him into their book. his powers also make him kind of a bad sex joke.

So i've set out to make him a little more relevant. do any of you remember Morph from the 90's X-Men animated series; specifically, his story arc? well i'm suggest that style of heel turn for Shortpack. looking from the outside, we can't always see how damaging Decimation was to individual mutants. Professor X wasn't just Shortpack's boss. Shortpack idealized him; much in the same way that Cyclops used to. at puberty, he started shrinking uncontrollably. Xavier taught him to use his own psionic abilities to halt the shrinking. Xavier didn't teach him how to reverse the process; possibly seeing a mutant w/ a 'handicap' as more malleable (i.e. Cyclops).

anyways, we're first introduced to a still superhumanly optimistic/idealistic/Xavier-worshipping spy-handler Shortpack not too long after he witnessed one of his agents being burned alive. he was also deeply in love (could be a crush considering his youth) with this agent. but he doesn't get much time to grieve as Professor X saddles him w/ a new operative (w/o telling him that she's an unrepentant terrorist).

well, over the course of Mystique's series, Shortpack faced danger, tragedy, and betrayal. he barely survived being killed by his magically-not-dead former agent/"high school crush." he was left thinking that Mystique had also died under his watch & stranded outside of Niagra Falls. then came M-Day & Bishop's attempted murder of Professor X. the Xavier Underground was no more. Charles has likely forgotten all about his field-operatives; even the one who looked at him as a mix between father figure & messiah. so, what do i propose?

A significantly more jaded Shortpack finds himself directionless and cut off from the Xavier & the rest of the telepath network. being roughly 8 inches tall makes it hard to go work at Subway. plus he's been training all of his life to be an intelligence operative & field-handler. despite his size, he's actually an athletic guy, a marksman, & skilled at obtaining sensitive information. he could be easily recruited by anyone who can A) give him a direction and B) teach him how to use his powers more effectively. i'll leave the rest pretty much up in the air. i could see Shortpack (Mystique rubbing off of him a little) being the field leader for a new Mutant Liberation Front. there plenty of other limbo-bound mutants to recruit ex. Primal, Vincente, etc. anyways, i think the important part is having be able to return to human size. him being able to shrink is kind of lame. but his spy training & experience directing other mutants will make up for that.

The way I would see it, he would show up on X-Factor's doorstep, Layla Miller style, and somehow, just somehow, he would get the doorbell to ring. I imagine Guido would answer, hear a voice but see no one and a voice then tells the big ol'lug to look down. He is picked up, taken in and describes something mysterious, that making up a new mission for X-Factor and Shortpack somehow being the target. In the end, after the mission is complete, Shortpack remains on the team.
