Recently read Frankensteins Womb, which then led me to purchasing Aetheric Mechanics...
I remember both titles coming out...thinking to myself..."eh, looks too uninspired"...at the time, short, black and white and for $6.99!?! well, obviously i'm an asshole, because both of these books are great... Aetheric Mechanics takes you on a journey with, pretty much sherlock holmes, trying to solve a case of "the man who wasn't there", to which the ending twist makes the whole story worth it...just the interplay with the "antagonist" and the characters we followed throughout the whole book over the last tenth make this a book worthy of a purchase... and Frankenstein's Womb...I've read it 3 times now and each time find myself fascinated by how simply he grabs you and pulls you through a philosophical journey not very often experienced in the medium... no pun intended, the life he brings the frankenstein monster, as well as the castle and itself is pretty intriguing...along with the dilemma that ends up consuming mary shelly by the end... i looked to no avail for a thread on these books, which surprised me a bit...i think if you're bored in many ways like i've become with a lot of what's being sold to us, or just looking for something that requires an extra bit of thought but with a solid pay-off, both of these books are something that should be looked into... |

Note to self: Look into these.
I reallly, really liked Ellis' just-concluded (dammit!) Hotwire for Radical, & while I tend to be wary of those writers whose stuff inspires what I see as idolatry by their fawning acolytes (see particularly: Morrison, Grant; Millar, Mark; Moore, Alan), I'm starting to suspect that by god, he might just be on to something. Otherwise, the first half-dozen or so ishes of Doktor Sleepless I found decent enough, but nothing to run raving into the streets about, & Black Summer sort of petered out from a very promising beginning. I read the Planetary TPBs for the first time within the last couple of years & liked them just fine, but again my world wasn't turned inside-out or anything. Etc. etc. etc. But yeah, Mechanics & Womb sound pretty promising.

yeah, i dropped doktor sleepless mainly due to a too many book monthly problem...eventually i may come back to pick up some older issues...
i did love black summer, mainly for the feature film feel of the book...if this doesn't end up as a movie, i'll be disappointed... also followed ignition city, which for the first 2 issues was great, but fell a bit with 3 and brought me to give up finishing with #4... ellis can be hit or miss for me... typically, his very unconventional ideas provide a great basis for the stories he does, just that his execution sometimes falls way flat...something i did not find at all in the two books this topic was made for... |

I've got 3 or 4 cheap back-issue Doktor Sleeplesses headed to me even as I type, & perhaps oI can read 'em all in one fell swoop & gain a greater impression of just where Ellis is going with this one.
Ignition City #1 I liked OK. It's on my pull list, but either my LCS forgot to get #2 & I didn't realize it (I got #3 just fine), or I've lost the bloody comic. *sigh*
