EXT. TOWN OF BODIE – EVENING
SUNSET Along a hillside overlooking the town is the famous STANDARD MINING MILL. its surrounded by several caves that lead to the mines below. emerging from one of the CAVES is Frank Bodie(30s). He puts his hat on and lights a cigar while listening to the violence erupting throughout the town, and watching the gunfire flashing from the streets. He walks down. BODIE: town’s a little more active tonight than usual. Hmm, I could use a drink. MOMENTS LATER INT. MAGNOLIA SALOON Inside and minding her place as always is MARY(20s), the saloons owner. She hands JACOB(late 40s), a regular, a shot of whiskey. There’s several other regulars around the saloon having drinks, trying not to pay too much attention to the gunfire out in the streets. MARY: here you go jake. JACOB: getting’ hairy out there hey mary? MARY: yes it is. JACOB: you don’t seem to worried. MARY: suppose I should. But, as long as they stay out there and I’m in here I’ll try not to worry about it. Mary looks down under the Bar and makes sure her Winchester rifle is cocked. Jacob smirks as Mary pours him another drink. She walks around the room and fills glasses for the other customers. Seconds later a large BURLY MAN walks through the swinging doors with TWO MEN at his side. The two stand by the doors. This is JAMES “BEEF” LOGDEN, a member of a crew out west called the CALIFORNIA HELL RIDERS. Mary makes her way back around the bar. BEEF: Only thing I want to see in your hands when you pull them out from under that bar is a shot glass. I see a barrel you go down unnerstand? MARY: crystal clear big boy BEEF: it’s beef. Or james. I don’t like people with a wise tongue. Especially a woman. MARY: So now that I know your name what would you like to drink? BEEF walks up and leans against the bar. BEEF: mule skinner. So, I hear you’re a good friend of the man they call Frank Bodie? She ignores the question. Mary pours him a drink. He takes it and puts it down. BEEF: I’m here with a big crew. Not wise to play wit me young lady. My men and I were up at his house. Can’t seem to find him. That is his house at the end of maiden lane? Mary says nothing. BEEF leans over and grabs her by the hair. BEEF: is it or not? I told ya I was not playing games. MARY: He’ll be here. You don’t have to look for him. BEEF: well that’s good to know. Because I’m looking to test this Bad Man from Bodie. any miner can shoot a gun after putting down bottles of booze. But a real gunfighter knows how to use his piece. Sure you know that. MARY: and im sure you know this, it’s not smart to go into a battle unprepared He lets go of her. BEEF: oh we’re prepared. you hear those gunshots beginning to fade out there? That’s the sound of the Hellriders taking over this town. And finishing off whatever’s left of that 601 crew. MARY: you really think that’s what it is? The remaining patrons make their way out of the saloon. Beef laughs BEEF: Hmmpf. So much for the blizzard from bitter creek. Tough town my ass. Didn’t even stay to help ya. And yes, that’s right squaw, that’s exactly what it is. my men are pretty good with the steel. MARY: Sorry I cant agree with you, pretty good can still get you killed in this town. BEEF laughs again. He Looks at his men who laugh with him. BEEF: gotta like her. MARY: and that sound of gunfire starting to fade, is the sound of your men dying,…beefy. One by one. Slightly amused at Mary’s bravado BEEF back hands her hard, knocking her backwards. She begins bleeding from her mouth. BEEF: Darlin’ you are one gutsy women. You must be the one they call Mary Devine? She wipes her mouth. BEEF: I did warn you. Aren’t ya gonna scream for help? MARY: im not the one in danger Suddenly, gunshots and glass breaking makes BEEF turn around. He sees both his men have been shot. one stumbles forward and dies. They other has been shot in the back of the neck. He crawls for a second as blood protrudes from his throat, he collapses. BEEF: sonova,….. Beef pulls his revolvers out. Both guns are shot out of his hands. One of his fingers has been blown off. He screams. BEEF: Mother fucker!! Give me a gun. POV: watching from the opposite side of Main Street in front of the Magnolia something moves quickly across the street, through the SWINGING DOORS and is right in front of BEEF in seconds. Its Frank Bodie and with one arm he’s lifts him in the air. Fear overcomes Beef Logden. BEEF: Holy mother of god. Frank Bodie brings Logden’s face up to his. His eyes are glowing red. He grinds his teeth. BODIE: I don’t like people touching my friend. Without effort he slings BEEF across the room where he comes crashing into the wall. He lands on top of a table and rolls over onto the floor. With the air knocked out of him He struggles as he tries to stand up. Bodie eyes turn to normal as Mary hands him a shot of WHISKEY. He puts it down. MARY: is there more of them? BODIE: yep. Several of them. Went running toward mono. MARY: maybe you should finish it off. BODIE: I will. But I just woke up. So I’m gonna have another drink first….. Coming out of it BEEF manages to stand up. A bullet pierces his neck. He drops dead. Blood oozes out of his neck. Mary pours Bodie another shot as they look at BEEF’s dead body. BODIE:….and put a little food in my body. It’s been awhile. sitting in a dark corner of the saloon the Demon Killion watches the whole event. he smiles approvingly to himself |
