Default Yay! Another sci-fi homophobe!

A while ago, GLAAD came out with a grade report regarding LGBT characters and their usage on television's various networks. Among the networks was Syfy (Ugh.) who ended up recieving a fail grade, and in response said that in the future they'd attempt to do better.

Apparently, an author by the name of John C. Wright really, and I mean really doesn't like that idea. So, like most bigots, he decided to rant about it online.

Quote:
I am hoping, of course, that future shows will also portray sadomasochism and bondage in a positive light -- we are all looking forward to FLASH GORDON'S TRIP TO GOR, I hope. Love affairs with corpses, small children, and farm animals will also be on display in a natural nonchalant fashion in the new raft of progressive shows, titles such as I DREAM OF STINKY, PEDERASTY JUNCTION, and OLD MACDONALD HAD A SHEEP -- but no Mormons, whose moral standing we all abhor.

Why are you willing to tolerate sexual perversion but not racism? In a world with no standards, what makes a malfunction of love higher on your standard than a malfunction of hate? Is an irrational lust and longing to mimic the mating act with a sex with which one cannot mate, at its root, any more or less disconnected to reality than an irrational fear and hatred of a Negro? How do we know race-hate is not genetic? Look at how scorned and put-upon racists are! Can we spare them no cheap Leftist pity? Why don't we simply call racism an alternate anti-ethnic orientation, similar to hetero-toleration, but different?

In other news, Timothy Leary will be giving Sci-Fi an "F" grade for failing to portray drug abuse positively. Castro and Pol Pot will be giving Sci-Fi an "F" grade for their show BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, which portrays the mass slaughter of innocent human beings in a negative light. Dean Martin will be giving Sci-Fi an "F" for failing to portray drunkenness as life-affirming. Don Juan will be giving Sci-Fi an "F" grade for failing to have a show that portrays serial adultery in a positive light -- but Don gives BATTLESTAR GALACTICA an "A" for sleeping with robots. Uncle Screwtape reminds me the any form of sex that is sterile and selfish wins the approval of the Lowerarchy.
What a wonderful person.

So after getting caught, he decided to take down the post only for someone to save it (thus the link above) in the meantime. Well, after getting in a wide variety of shit for it, he decided to offer an apology in return.

Quote:
This language is certainly more temperate than when I called them perverts. I was wrong to use such hurtful words: I freely admit this in public and humbly beg for your pardon and forgiveness, but if I were not a Christian, nothing could have planted the seed of doubt or self-doubt in my iron heart, and not even a team of wild horses could have dragged that admission from my stubborn teeth. Someday Christianity may make me fit company for human beings, my brothers, and you are vastly deceived if you think this religion is making me more irrational, rather than less.
Ugh. However, after all of this, at least I know that sometime, and somewhere, Orson Scott Card has a friend.

Has anybody read any of his books?

Of course.
I've read a bit about him over the years, and it always felt off for some reason. And now I know why.

And it's sad, because he's a good writer, and I loved his Golden Age saga.

The fuck? I think it's stupid for GLAAD to be giving tv networks grades, but this guy is just an douchebag. Not Orson Scott Card level douchebag, but bigoted douchebag nonetheless.

Checking it out, he's another religious fanatic -- Catholic-flavoured, this time.

Entertainingly, for someone who wants to proscribe certain sexual behaviour, he describes himself as a libertarian. Which I often find means: "Don't you dare hold me accountable for my behaviour; I have the right to express any prejudice I like".

so what dose Glaad say about Star Trek?

There no gays there or in star wars and the black population was cut in half in episode three.

Ok so let me see if I got this clear;

Douche of a writter rants against gay people because....something due to GLAAD giving Sci/fi grades. Following his rant he posts an appology stating that it was Christianity that helped him give it?

So what he converted in the two or three days during which he was crucified for being an ass? Or he was a Christian to begin with but then that begs the question why the so wonderful religion didn't stop him from his rant in the first place.

Seriously most of these hicks are either catholics or some other relgion that was either spawned from Christianity or has been influenced by it. For instance when was it the last time you saw a bigot budhist monk?

The Dalai Lama's not an overt ally of the LGBT community

Tell me, were his parents brother and sister by any chance? Short of severe head trauma I don't know what else could have lead him to be so mentally deficient.

That said "Flash Gordon's trip to Gor" sounds AWESOME. I might have to have a go at writing that It'll be better than the garbage Johnny-Boy writes

Most of that (with Star Trek) was the result of network interference. Gene Roddenberry said that there would be a gay cast member on Next Generation, but in the end, he wasn't allowed to do it. Dax on DS9 was bisexual, but that's as far as it got. Voyager and Enterprise were being made about the same time studios started relaxing their rules on openly gay characters, but I never watched either, so I don't know how or if it was addressed.

Also, Leonard Nimoy gave this quote on the subject. "It is entirely fitting that gays and lesbians will appear unobtrusively aboard the Enterprise — neither objects of pity nor melodramatic attention."

Who the fuck is John C. Wright? Hell, at least Card's won a Hugo, that gives him some right to expect people to pay attention to him.

Good god, he has a wife? Please tell me he's been snipped so there's no risk of him procreating and filling the world with his vile spawn

The novels have been better about this; they've had plenty of gay characters. In fact, I think they retconned in that one of the redshirts who got Borged in First Contact was gay. His widower is a major character in the Titan series, I believe.

Peter David's New Frontier series has a character from a race of hermaphrodites, who gleefully partakes of both human sexes (and, presumably, all four Andorian ones). Of course, hir people consider hir a freak for sleeping outside the species.

And then there was that truly bizarre bit with Robin Lefler having sex with her dead husband while he was possessing his sister's body. Which, I didn't realize until now, is pretty much straight from Ghost, isn't it?
