Setting aside the fun with the bank... Y'see, they're playing the game where I desposit sixty dollars to cover the checks I wrote for sixty dollars earlier but they wait until AFTER the checks come in to credit the money to my account, then take the sixty dollars as 'Overdraft Fees' so I'm sixty dollars in the hole anyway... And more checks are out...
And setting aside the mortifying experience a couple days ago when I ran out of gas driving home from the library... I was heading toward a gas station when the car died... Did my best to pull over to the shoulder but there wasn't enough room to get completely out of the way... Highway patrol came along, helped me roll it into someone's driveway and left a flare to signal the AAA truck... Yesterday, came home to discover a note saying a neighbor had complained about a loud party in my apartment and an offensive guest of mine who'd been shouting in the parking lot. Since I haven't had a guest over in years, have NEVER had a party, and had no idea what they were talking about, this came as something of a surprise. I called the apartment complex office and talked to the managers. All I could figure was someone reported the wrong apartment number or something. They seemed understanding, but I don't know if they got this, nor do I think they fully comprehend how unlikely it is after living there over a decade I would suddenly develop a yen for wild parties and loud guests. It is especially annoying considering they said it would go into my 'Permanent File' (Yep, just like junior high) and if I received three such reports, I'd be evicted. More disturbing, since I didn't do anything, there's nothing I can stop doing to prevent this from happening. All I can do is hope there's no more loud parties and/or guests, or if so, at least the busybodies who report them will get the apartment numbers right next time. More likely, I'LL have to be the busybody. I usually try not to worry about people getting a touch rowdy, but if they insist...

Re: the bank---
Banks do this all the time. They like to say, "I'm sorry, our computer processes this stuff at night, and it does the debits before the deposits." Go to the bank manager, tell her or him that you *deposited* a check the same day to cover the checks you'd written, and see if they'll remove the NSF charges for you. Also, with banks, if you deposit money after 2pm, it doesn't process that night---it processes the *following* day's night. So, get that check/money to the bank before 2pm (some banks it may be 1pm), or you'll be waiting an extra day---or in the case of a weekend, if you deposit it on Friday after 2pm or on Saturday morning, it won't process until *Monday* night. Anyway, give it a go with the bank manager. Show how you deposited, but their system did debits before deposits, and see if she/he'll remove the NSF charges because the money was *there* but they didn't process it *first*. If they won't work with you, consider changing banks.

Tried it. Explained the whole thing to the bank manager. "Well, it's not in our policy to refund overdraft fees..." He insisted it was actually my fault for writing checks in the first place. "You need to stop doing that..."
It SEEMS to have stopped. I say SEEMS because I thought that twice before. Seven hundred dollars completely evaporated --That's over half my monthly take-home pay, by the way-- and he couldn't understand why I should be upset. Oh, and what started the ball rolling? I was TWO DOLLARS overdrawn. Park National, by the way. Might wanna make a note of it.

Oh, and if you do change banks, after everything is all done and you've waited a couple days to be sure, write a letter to the bank's HQ and tell them why you left them---along with including the branch's location and bank manager's name who refused to help you.

Solaris is right, I've had to do it with clients before... though I must admit bringing in the clients so the manager can see they have mental retardation tends to help. OTOH, its gotten certain clients out of as much as 400 dollars in overdraft fees (don't ask, just know some people should NOT be their own legal guardians).
