I had one when I was kid and with my son turning 8 years old this week, we've purchased him a telescope. I was kind of amazed at how much the amatuer stargazer can get for the money compared to when I was a kid.
For only a little more than what my parents paid for my scope as a kid, you can now purchase telescopes with auto-tracking and alignment. The one we got can be upgraded later if he stays interested through a software package and ethernet cable that will allow him to track objects automatically via a laptop. It looks like he could even beam the images over to a television on a cold winter day, sip hot chocolate and watch the software find "Tonight's Best" viewing options. Apparently, he will be able to see more objects in one night than Galileo saw in his lifetime. Human beings are simply amazing.

as a kid, I used to love that stuff! but checking out the really cool stuff meant getting super expensive telescopes and stuff, so my interest waned.

Heck yeah! I love astronomy, space exploration, all that stuff.
Sadly, I live in a heavily light-polluted suburb now, so my little high-school caliber scope is useless. . |
