Mobile Suit Gundam has gone through quite a few incarnations, but interestingly a good chunk of them have been retellings of the original story.
There's the original TV series, but there's also the three movies that retcon certain elements of the TV series, such as which mecha were used in space (Instead of the Guntank being used in space it's replaced by a second Guncannon) and the survival of certain characters. There's also Tomino's novels which also retcon the characters. Then there's Kondo's manga, which featured a darker version of the series with redesigned mecha, Gundam The Origin which was an updated version of the story, and "For the Barrel", a new novel version of the story which I believe was serialized in Newtype. So which interpetation do you prefer? |

I love it all, but I really enjoyed the novels more.

Never read it, but the movie was miles away better than the series just cause it cut out all the excess badie of the week mobile suit, unneccasary model advertisements(coughGArmorcough), throwaway episodes, etc.

The movies are the better watch. Still believe should have and wish they had shown them on Cartoon Network instead of the series. The animation is better. Changes were made in regards to certain machines. For example the White Base ends up with two Gun Cannons toward the end where in the series they only had the one. Some "monster of the week" type enemies are left out in the movie. The pacing for them are better then the series. The TV series tends to drag at points.

The movies are available in sub-only format (Interestingly, the TV series is in dub format only, I think because the original Japanese audio of the TV series degraded). There was a dub of the Gundam movies on VHS, but it was one of the worst dubs ever if I recall, so they just released the subs for the DVDs.
